  • Road Rover - installed

I received the Roadrover the day before my trip from Melb to Canberra. Believe it or not it arrived within 2 days after speaking with "Jessie" from Roadrover.

After a bit of mucking around I installed the unit with only one problem. Dont use the existing screw from the Old Toyota Radio. Did does cause the unit to hang on the DVD. Use the screws that come with the Roadrover. - Next job ... the rear camera.

After a couple of days using it my comments are as follows:

Overall Look to match console = 10/10

GPS (comparing a Tomtom I own ) it gets you where you want to go but is lacking functionality 6/10

    DVD - 8/10

Bluetooth - Volume needs adjusting 7/10

Radio -Whilst connecting to GPS / Location sometime radio station disappears 7/10

I can run DVD, Bluetooth, Radio and GPS all at once 8/10

Its not perfect but for $1200 with rear Headrest LCD screens I cannot complain.

Just for the record 9.2 Litre per 100kms sitting on 110.

    • Okay folks I have had a few requests for red light camera and speed camera files for the Route66 software package. So I have created a little Zip file for anyone with a Roadrover to download actually it should work with any Australian Route66 version for any device but I have only proved it on the Roadrover. Anyway you may download the files and instruction sheet and use if you wish to with my blessings, I hope you find them of help and add some worthwhile functionality to the Route66 package. the download can be had from here:

      • Dear Mansour,
I found similar products in sharjah i dunno the brand but they offer me for 4000 dirhams including installations, rear camera with 1 year warranty. Im not so familiar about the price but i found it fair enough if im gonna get thru net and im sure they gonna charge me for shipping.

        • If the price is right

          Deat FDTallah

THe unit cost me with shipping and clearance about 3300 Dhs and WIth 500 for installation

Not bad , if it's the roadrover then the guy is charging you about 200Dhs for profit , not bad I would say

Mav mate Thanks a million , I will try the speed camera files on Dubai maps and let you know of the result

                • Roadrover speed camera files

                  Mav,

Top job on the speed camera files for the roadrover. I live in Qld just north of Brisbane. As Qld is a little slower that the other states we are only just getting fixed speed cameras installed throughout the state. So far there are only three but it is expected that up to 20 will be installed over the next 12 months. In relation to the files, I see they are in Excel format. Is it just a matter of adding another entry with relevant details such as latitude and longitude for the roadrover to accept it?

If so I will collate the data of the known fixed speed cameras and any known speed camera van locations and post them for us all to add into the files.

                  Regards, Higgsee.
p.s. finally have a vin number etc for my Prado and expected pick up is 05/05/08. Fingers crossed, can't wait!!!!!!

Excellent Higgsee on your pick up date.

Yes it would be an easy matter of just adding the data to the files to incorporate them. Go for it champ it would be good to include new cameras.

                    • Right, well I started installing my reversing camera today and I can say straight up that my 07 Sept build Prado does not have any prewiring for a reversing camera. I looked everywhere for a sign of it in the rear door and side cargo panel areas but there was nothing. I thought the unused plug in the back door may have been for power but nope nothing showed on the meter for the pins in it when Reverse was selected.

So in light of that I ran all the wiring myself to the drivers side tail light assy and ran the video cable up to the front of the cabin. I have yet to attached the video cable as I ran out of time and needed to come to work, so I will finish the front work on Friday.

Here is a photo of the camera I used it is only an el cheapo from ebay, the original camera I purchased was a CCD camera but it was just way too big and was more suited to attaching to the top of a caravan which is probably what I will do with it in the future.

Anyway here is the one I mounted to the rear door:

                      • Reverse Camera

                        Mav Mate

This is great , it's actually better than mine because it's smaller and can be concealed easily

Please note to check the seal quality and tightness, mine leaked some due into the inside glass of the camera -after a heavey car wash- and dried out after a while , however I tereated this by using clear seal applied with a toothpick very carefully and it worked ! Now I can cross the Murray River without fear of leaks in the camera champer -may be the car but not the camer  -

Good Luck with the remaining cabling works , Cheers Mav

                        • Well I finished the reversing camera install. I learnt some things that will probably come in handy for others so here they are.

                          1. It is easier to use the passengers rear light assy to connect up the wiring for the camera as it is very easy to get to the cabling without having to pull panels off.

                          2. The roadrover does exactly what it advertises in that it will remove any display that you currently have on the LCD and replace it with the video from the camera when the car is put into reverse. However it will not disable any audio that may be playing be it from USB drive or radio. As soon as the car is taken out of reverse the roadrover will switch back to the last video input it was displaying.

                          3. The roadrover has a built in warning zone marker which is shaped like a pyramid, it is broken into thirds with the first coloured red the next coloured yellow and the next coloured green. Only the lines are coloured not the whole area within the lines. This is important to know if youu are getting a camera that also produces its own line markings as the display can get a bit cluttered.

                          4. If you need to adjust the brightness or contrast or chroma variance of the displayed camera image then it is a bit fiddley but basically you select reverse check you image then take it out of reverse and use the control knob closest to our righthand drive steering wheel to adjust the brightness, contrast and chroma settings. It is a case of making adjustments then reselecting reverse to check what difference you have made. When I first did mine the image was very washed out and pale looking till I made the adjustments.

                          5. Whilst messing around installing the sense wire to the rear passenger light assy I found what may or may not be the reverse camera wiring that Toyota was suppose to prewire. There is a little black box mounted in the jack compartment to the rear of the car side of it and there was defintie signs of this being an add on but it may be the wiring for the towbar.

That is all I can think of for now but if I think of more I will add to this post.

                          • Well I am not at all impressed with the ebay cheap camera, its performance varies greatly with ambient temperature so I have bitten the bullet and decided to get the Pioneer ND-BC2 camera. This comes with a small converter box that produces a composite video output so it should be a pretty easy job to swap out the camera. It is an NTSC camera but I will live with that, it is also a CCD camera and not a CMOS camera.

Now just have to wait till it gets here from the USA.

Your 100% correct with the reverse camera install. As I have completed the reverse camera install myself along with the caravan electronic braking module.

I have learn't some things from above.

1: I didn't know how to adjust the contrast as my picture is a bit pale. - thank you

2: I can bend my camera enough to see the towball - which is fantastic

                              3: Green makers = 1.5 metres. Yellow = 1 metre . Red = 250mm

Surely these "distances" would be dependant on you camera field of view & positioning? Cheers.
