I bought the 6 for my son and it is very good however he has since decided he needs the 5 because of the superior off road set up.

I like the 6. Depends which you rate higher. Have a good look at both. What price the 5 and where?

For those who are running HEMA maps on an iPad what functionality does the app give you (apart from displaying the maps of course)? I'm asking because I have the 4WD maps download for my Navman but they are just basic lines on a map, not topo and no extra features that I can see.

Can't even get the damn Navman to update anymore but the 4WD maps were a one-off download.

Corinne let me get back to you on this. I will sit the HN6 and the pad side by side and compare and contrast for you.

Thanks Michael, have gathered enough vouchers to purchase an iPad so am keen to know if it's a worthwhile investment.

Fido #1 went out last night and didn't get home until midnight so no access to the HN6; will try to do compare them tonight.

I have a semi-urgent question in relation to the iPad's GPS functionality. I know you need the 3G for the GPS but would you be able to achieve the same functionality with a WiFi only model and a wireless 4G hotspot? It's a small router the size of a mobile phone that is external to the iPad and would talk to it presumably via wireless.

Personally I think the SIM option is more self-contained and portable. Hubby wants me to explore the alternative however as that device can be used with other devices on the plan, not limited just to the iPad.

I haven't purchased the iPad yet but was going to do that this afternoon.

Sorry I know this isn't HEMA specific discussion but the iPad is being purchased to use with HEMA maps so I think it qualifies.

99% sure that The wifi only iPad doesn't have a GPS chip inside. You need to get an 3G model. Or get another tablet that does. Eg nexus 7 . Have a look at the iPad specs in the location sections:

Yes but the Telstra WiFi Hotspot device does as I've since discovered. Since it has GPS I'd assume it would share that info with the iPad through the wireless connection.

I'm not fully sold on the hotspot idea though as it's another device to carry around albeit fairly small.

Sorry, can't help you there You can get external gps accessories for the iPad, but I have no idea if this will work. Good luck! I'd be interested to know as I have a wifi only ipad myself!

I did, just back from JB HiFi actually. I bought the 32gb iPad 4 3G and Wifi model and it cost me nothing other than some Qantas points and my birthday vouchers.

I found out the sim in the Telstra WiFi hot spot is a full sized one so won't work in the iPad if you wanted to use it without the router, that would have been ideal.

Still looking at options, might just go pre-paid. Hubby works for Telstra so we get plans cheaper, depends which works out more economical.
