The winch saver will work fine with the eyelet thimble but personally I would not use an eyelet with rope at all.

Same here - but that's probably not a surprise

My rope did have a thimble but I was worried that it was putting strain on the rope and would probably have cut through it under load so I removed it. Mine is now like the shot 1CB posted where the loop in the rope is directly around the centre pin of the hook.

So, did you fix it or replace it?

            • Replaced it with a decent switch from the auto electricians.
I replaced the original broken one with another the same from Jaycar and it broke again withing minutes.

The thimble distributes pressure across a smooth bend. You 2 are obviously mixing up your prescriptions.

1CB, its a flick lightly action, not push the button. I.e. an analogue motion, not digital.

It's difficult to explain but on mine the hook wouldn't go over the thimble as it was too thick and it had to be squashed to get the hook on. The problem with this is that squeezing it in the vertical plane made it open out in the perpendicular plane - this caused severe strain on the rope as it exited the thimble. I felt that putting strain on the rope (i.e. actually using it for its intended purpose) would have probably caused damage to the rope where it went over the ends of the thimble. Added to this, Marc was in contact with a rope supplier who said that you shouldn't use a thimble as they put undue strain on the rope anyway. Taking these two together I decided to simply remove the thimble.

                  • The rope supplier actually stated that the thimbles are not rated at anywhere near the rating of the synthetic rope and therefore in extreme cases they collapse, create an edge when they fold and will cut the rope.
Due to the inherent nature of the rope, it provided no support to the thimble as wire rope does by maintaining its round form.
This is from the trials he has been conducting with the army and the conclusion was unanimous in that you are better off without the thimble.
It is totally uneccessary for rope and in some cases detrimental and possibly dangerous.

Anyway, mine came without one so you do whatever you want

Mine was - just squashed it back to the original shape and rolled the rope off the edge, but it depends how tight the rope is around the thimble in the first place. You could always undo it and remake the eye in the rope if it's too tight to get off.

Ha ha, works with my boss too

Seriously though, lots of people have rope with a thimble and just as many without.
Only the more extreme situations that would be of concern.
If it comes out easily great, if not, dont worry about it

Aparently these "tube thimbles" are the only rated and correct ones for rope, so they say!!

I think the last five posts explain that one.
