It depends on where you are mounting it, I'm kinda out of spec on my Uniden 870 ( http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UNIDEN-AT...-/400356565352 ) by mounting on bullbar. I can always switch down to my 3 db "shorty" that wouldn't be subject to the issue you experienced Smithy.
Have a look here for specifics - http://www.gme.net.au/public/pdf/bro...antennaslr.pdf

There's lots of combo deals on eBay. Though truth be told, I don't have an "approved" bulbar aerial. But considering that the 6db whip is only 80 cm's tall and is fibreglass, I haven't noticed anything unusual with it on forestry roads.
I did use a good dose of lock tight on the screw assembly when fixing to the stock hole on my TJM 13 bulbar, hasn't moved or come loose.

You will need one for when you are a trip leader on the 2015 GTG wink wink.

Pay the money and stay with the brand names that have the reputation.
My only issue with the current UHF's coming out is not not many have manual Squelch, I much prefer the manual squelch over the auto.
Bernie.

G'day Jamie
I didn't get it in the end. With the cost that were being quoted (and confirmed by you) for the upgrade I decided it just wasn't worth it, so I'm still using my 40 channel hand held Uniden at the moment. It does the job for me until I find a decent in-car unit to come along (at a good price).
Cheers
