i'll take some pics tonight with them in. no before pics, but you can chuck your car in reverse and hab a look at your lights.

will let you guys know how they go. i was a bit worried that they would be a bit too bright for the camry waiting for my park at night though. so hopefully, i won't need to switch on the rear LED work lights on when i reverse at night. it is good though, because people will actually stop and they will actually see you reversing.

        pics coming.
Did you find these a brighter? Any downsides?

            • Far out. just spent all night catching up on the forum. I haven't been on here for a few weeks.

last I posted, the thrust bearing for my clutch collapsed. that was Easter week end. I have only just managed to get the gearbox out this week.

The problem is evident in the pics. the snout is crap. and Mr Toyota, you suck for making the snout a one piece alloy cast apart of the bellhousing.
and a replacement bell housing is $850 trade price, and guess what, 3 in stock in Darwin. So Toyota don't know of any problems with the alloy bell housing/snout. yeah right.

wear on the snout. I have seen worse. I was also surprised on how clean it was inside the bell housing. With all the water and mud I drive in up here, it's pretty clean in there.

              • more pics. here's half of the thrust bearing.

and the other half. still in the pressure plate.

and you can see where the fork was contacting the pressure plate

                • apparently when my 1st thrust bearing collapsed, Toyota supposedly put in a new clutch as well. (58,000km)

and with the Prado at 119,000km, the 2nd thrust bearing has collapsed.

that an average of 60,000km per bearing for me. not to mention gearbox out every time.

now, my dilemma is, what do I do now? I will be putting in a new clutch anyway, and they're not cheap.
a new bell housing is dear as fark, but I will have the same issue in another 60,000km.
do I just get a repair sleeve for the V6 manual box and hope it fits? the problem with the repair sleeve is that the thrust bearing ID is bored to suit the new snout/sleeve OD. the V6 and the D4D thrust bearings are different, which means even if the repair sleeve did fit, my thrust bearing would not.
I've asked around about getting a sleeve made up, but everyone says its too hard and its gonna cost more than the $850 replacement bell housing. apparently. I also think it would be pretty hard for someone to machine the snout as its inside of the bell housing. the bell housing also looks like its holding some shafts of some sort into the gearbox. which means if I pull the bell housing off the gearbox, I may compromise the sealing or bits might start falling out.

so, pretty much, do I just put it all back together with a new bearing and clutch, use some marine grease which might be harder for water to wash away, and then open up the inspection panels in the side of the bell housing every service (5000km) and spray some silicon or lithium based grease on the snout being carful to avoid spraying any on the clutch plate.

                  • this is the friction plate after 61,000km supposedly. I think its still the original clutch and wasn't replaced when I was told it was.

                        • Are you going to try to repair the snout? Too late now but would the V6 clutch kit fit with the snout sleeve?

i looked at heaps of different options. there is a thread in the 120 drive line section on what i have found.

the V6 has a different throw out bearing and fork set up. the V6 is almost identical to the Hilux's.
For some reason, the D4D is different to all others.

the repair sleeve works with the V6 throw out bearing as the ID is bored out to suit the sleeve.
the D4D bearing doesn't have enough material to bore out for the sleeve. i also think the repair sleeve will fit my bell housing, but with out changing the bearing and bearing release mechanism, it's not going to work.

                            • but to answer the question, i will wet and dry it smooth, and then see how it lasts with the new clutch and bearing.

i think next time will call for a new bell housing. that's $2 a day for the next 2 years, which should cover a new bell housing and labour to change it out.

                              • If the bearing just sat there I would suggest some Belzona or similar metal putty which you can shape with emery tape once it is dry but not sure how it will go with the continual linear movement. We had a bearing run on a big fan (13MW motor). New shaft was a 6+ month lead time. So we raised the journal surface by centre punching and then filled it with Belzona. Scraped and filed it to size. Lasted the 6 months and then another two years to the next plant shutdown. Good stuff.
