I have previously mounted on the windscreen and got good results however this time I needed my wipers so I mounted on bonnet.

The vibration in the bonnet destroys some of the image quality and this is visible 'blurring' which is annoying.

Maybe I'll try windscreen top lhs next time if I need wipers. Not ideal because it's off centre but better than the vibration of the bonnet.

What editing software packages are people using on a mac? iMovie only really supports 24,25,30 fps so 50fps PAL always converted to 25fps.
Not super happer with the quality of the exports from iMovie so far.

I smelled fuel when I stopped for a minute and noticed fuel leaking from below car. Lost about 60lr of fuel before I got t a serviceable road and stopped an then discovered this!

Those Videos from fraser I edited with Imovie, may of played with one in Imedia converter before uploading to youtube.
That car of yours is trying to tell you something about Toolangi.

        • Mark you will be ok not that hard to use , they chew batteries so gopro do have some new cases that you can charge while filming in car . I bought wasabi power for mine seems to work really well and you get two extra batteries .

This is what I bought there are other ways to charge just do a little research.

32 gig . About 2 and a half hrs depending on the settings you have it on . I was downloading to a iPad at night so I had another copy or gives you room back on your card . You won't have it running all the time but you are going on a long trip so you may have to gt some room on your card . You could maybe start to do some editing while your away so its not such a huge job when you return .

I have been toying with buying one of the Hero 3 Silver editions and have done a fair bit of research but can't find any details on whether there is an option to view what you have recorded on an Ipad or Iphone. From what I can gather you can preview what the camera is looking at and recording however once recorded you can't then play it back. The only way to play it back is via your desktop after transferring the files via cable.

Is this the case or am I missing something?

                  Cheers
You are correct. Once you start recording live playback is disabled. Haven't checked with latest firmware though. There is a fair bit of latency, over 2 secs, on the "live" preview. There is no way to view recorded files via the iPad. I haven't tried the card reader for the iPad which would allow you to plug the card into the iPad. The GoPro does record low res versions in parallel which is good for quick viewing of the files or upload. I have been mounting mine on the inside of the windscreen between the review mirror and the glass. Just picks up the A pillars so I have been happy with the results. The company I work for imports the ion AirPro and I took it out to bench against the GoPro. I am happy I purchased the GoPro. I haven't had a chance to compare the new Ion AirPro II. The big problem with the Ion is that you can't run external power and the WiFi at the same time. The Ion's video preview is good with little lag but the low res videos are not auto orientated if you have mounted the camer upside down. Maybe this has been fixed in the new version. If people are interested, I can load comparison files from my recent Fraser trip.

                  • Great video Crisp, I need to make it up to the Flinders Ranges in the near future for sure. One tip or should I say request on your videos or for anyone else at that matter, put a slow motion over sections of your video when you are passing road signs or places of interested. Makes it easier for the viewer to see where you are instead of trying to pause the video or go back. Again just a request or hint, certainly not criticism of anyone's movies.

Did you download the app. to run it from your phone? makes for changing settings and setup so much easier IMO.

Well there are a few options, you can get a battery backpack which gets you an expander door, or just carry spare batteries. Or you can buy a housing that allows for charging while on the go, though you would probably only use this option if recording from inside the vehicle.

The HERO3 certainly does chew through batteries, especially when you are running wifi control from your phone. But I love recording from outside and controlling the camera inside the Prado and not having to move. As I think I mentioned earlier it makes it easier to keep recording 2/3 minute clips which I find easier to do editing with on the computer come upload time in the video editing program.

I'll use a PC to edit when I return, I do have an I-PAD...BUT was very silly and bought a 16GB version, now realise should have bought the biggest one.

I have (overnight) set up the Go Pro, downloaded the I-Phone / I-Pad app and have that part working, also the wi fi remote contol (which now seems to not be needed).....I have set up for PAL, next step is to work out the settings for the video and gove it a try.

The guy at the shop reckons the Go Pro editing Software is as good as any....and bear in mind I am a gray headed "old fart" (well not that old but certainly far from a computer nerd) and so anything to be used has to be pretty simple...anyway I'll wory about that after I have taken some vision.

All good fun and so far so good

Thanks for the tips Playdoh, short 1-2 minute "bursts".....I just have to work out how to pick the settings.....I guess more reading tonight

                              • Mark, a big problem will be storage space for your clips. I was filling a 32GB MicroSD card each day on a recent trip. For a long trip like you're doing, either take several SD cards (NB. I've read others are having trouble with 64GB cards), or take a laptop to put the clips on during your trip. Even my 64GB iPad filled up very quickly on my ski trip (lots of other stuff on it.)
-Don't forget to update the GP3 to latest firmware before you go.
-Formate the SD card each time after you upload its photos to a laptop, if that's what you're doing.
