I believe that humans can and will have an impact on the climate. What I don't believe is that the Carbon Tax (sorry, *price* ) has anything to do with climate change. In the first few years, the government will hand out the windfall in compensation (chances are if you own a prado, you earn too much to get compensation, so bend over). But, after the introduction of the ETS in a few years, the compensation for businesses will cease, and then, compensation for families will be eaten up by smaller increases in family benefits and other subsidies. So, essentially, no-one will be compensated. But wait, the tax will still raise millions, if not billions, and you know exactly where it will go. Straight into the pockets of the politicians, wasted on more enquiries, global travel perks, and superannuation benefits. They will not be directed to health, education, and social welfare schemes.
In my opinion, the Gov cannot claim that this is anything to do with climate change when they have canned the solar schemes, the green loan scheme, the rain-water rebates, the insulation scheme etc etc. These are all initiative that had a HUGE potential to make some real change, as they affected what we do in our own homes on a daily basis. But, like everything that 'costs' money, they have been canned. If you have a brain (I'm convinced some people don't) you cannot in all honesty believe this is about the environment. If you do, go out into the paddock and Baa like a sheep, because that's what you are.
Of this you can be sure: If there were an election next week, the government would be absolutely SMASHED at the polls. I don't understand how in a democracy, when the people clearly want a referendum on something as divisive as this, their desires are ignored. The tax will go through, my ass will hurt from having more money withdrawn from it, and in a few years the sheep (I mean people) of Australia will have forgotten, and the gov will be sitting on a cash cow.
Rant over....
