I believe that humans can and will have an impact on the climate. What I don't believe is that the Carbon Tax (sorry, *price* ) has anything to do with climate change. In the first few years, the government will hand out the windfall in compensation (chances are if you own a prado, you earn too much to get compensation, so bend over). But, after the introduction of the ETS in a few years, the compensation for businesses will cease, and then, compensation for families will be eaten up by smaller increases in family benefits and other subsidies. So, essentially, no-one will be compensated. But wait, the tax will still raise millions, if not billions, and you know exactly where it will go. Straight into the pockets of the politicians, wasted on more enquiries, global travel perks, and superannuation benefits. They will not be directed to health, education, and social welfare schemes.

In my opinion, the Gov cannot claim that this is anything to do with climate change when they have canned the solar schemes, the green loan scheme, the rain-water rebates, the insulation scheme etc etc. These are all initiative that had a HUGE potential to make some real change, as they affected what we do in our own homes on a daily basis. But, like everything that 'costs' money, they have been canned. If you have a brain (I'm convinced some people don't) you cannot in all honesty believe this is about the environment. If you do, go out into the paddock and Baa like a sheep, because that's what you are.

Of this you can be sure: If there were an election next week, the government would be absolutely SMASHED at the polls. I don't understand how in a democracy, when the people clearly want a referendum on something as divisive as this, their desires are ignored. The tax will go through, my ass will hurt from having more money withdrawn from it, and in a few years the sheep (I mean people) of Australia will have forgotten, and the gov will be sitting on a cash cow.

    Rant over....

Just that the Greens and the government want to see an end to coal fired power station generation and yet we currently rely on this for 80% of our electicity. That's all.

iantz I agree with you. To drive change you have to drive behaviour and this version of a carbon tax doesn't do that.

It did not exist in 1814. And don'ttell me they used ice cores as they only tell the you about the local climate WHERE THERE IS ICE.

There is no accurate way of measuring the temperature of the earth even today. You can measure the temperature in each capital city but each will be affected by numerous variables to a greater or lesser extent than the next.

Also please explain how 0.7 degree drop in temperature lead to famine and disease in 1814. I think there is some confusion about cause and effect and plain coincidence.
Sorry I put the decimal point on the wrong side. Hang me from a tree.

There was a .7deg, thats .7, .7,.7,.7 of a degree drop in average global temperature.

For each of the little ice ages throughout the middle ages the average global temperature was lower by about 1degC. But that 1deg made a huge difference to the planet for that year. The winters are longer and harsher resulting in shorter growing periods and in many cases crops did not germinate. If you have no crops you have no food = famine.

Whilst their was political turmoil in Europe in 1814/15 that may also have had an effect on crops this was not the case in the US where crops failed due to a late winter.

The whole point of this is to show how susceptible the planet is to very small fluctuations in temperature.

So we have that sorted. Apologies for the typo.(I think you knew it was a typo but seeing as I cant prove that I will take it as a theory) Now onto your disproving of the rest.

And lets not forget the one thing that has influenced this planet since its inception........... the Sun. The one thing we can't control, but what life and climate are governed by.

oh dear sorry Andrew...I am a bit slow in my old age.....but the funny thing is I do recall back in the mid 1970's about the perceived doom & gloom of the coming Ice Age.....what ever happened to that idea???

Made for interesting reading in the papers of the day...."the crazy weather is all because of the French Nuclear Tests" & similar stuff......

                              Agree with that.

While Gillard is having to push the carbon tax barrow, you would have to be a political innocent to think it was all her idea. She's trying to make the best of having it rammed down her throat by the greens (and not doing such a good job of it)

Its all our own fault, we got the pollies we voted for. Let's do better next time.

Here is something interesting I heard the other day. For most of the last ten years through the drought caused by the El-nino effect we were told that this was due to climate change and we can expect more drought more often as a result. The current drought in the Horn of Africa is apparantly being caused by La-nina, the same system that caused our reecent floods.

So anyway if climate change means more El-nino's causing drought in a relativly wealthy nation such as ours, but it brings good rains to the Horn of Africa, one of the poorest regions on Earth. More El-nino's mean less La-Nina's so less drought in Africa. As I said earlier, winners and loosers.

I do recall the doom and gloom about the coming Ice age, this is the problem with the people who look at the science and say yes it is real, the science has changed so much in the last 20 years, no reason to suspect its not going to change significantly in the next 20 years, so how do we know what to believe.

I do like the Idea of a class action against the government to force another election, the current government has absolutely no mandate at all to introduce a carbon tax.

                                Cheers Andrew
