As a relatively new member (lurker) to this forum I have to say I'm surprised to see some very polarized rhetoric on this subject but hey, it's a free country so I'll give my two bob's worth:
The central theme for all the unions conducting PIA, especially the pilots, has been job security. If you figure your job is going to be off-shored then you haven't got much to lose. I think some posters have swallowed the company spin about demands of massive pay rises (most close to CPI) and jetstar paid same as Q (only if QF code share) etc.
You may also be forgetting management put all its eggs in two baskets - the A380 and 787 - both massively delayed, all its competitors operate 777 which kills everything but the 380 in Q's stable (remaining orders suspended). Then there's the route structure that assumes everyone wants to transit through Sydney or London for example. All massive failings yet Dixon got 10 mil plus in his last year, Joyce now gets double any other airline exec (apples with apples not underperforming airline with highly profitable banks).
I'm not a union man, I can't be in my current job, but I do realise I can afford to drive a prado because others have stood up to management trying to screw them. I have no time for militant type unionism but in the case of Qantas unions, they're moderate people.
This company is trying to circumvent the Qantas sale act and set the company up for another takeover in my opinion. Just as I'm happy Japs make good 4x4s, Aussies make excellent pilots (QF 32 for example) and engineers. If you're happy to pay jetstar/tiger/air Asia prices then you're probably happy driving a great wall, in all cases you may or may not get there!
