      Re: fuel prices

Thank you for your email of 25 November 2008 to the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (the ACCC) regarding the price of diesel.
The role of the ACCC is to ensure compliance with the Trade Practices Act 1974 (TPA), which is designed to encourage fair trading and discourage anti-competitive conduct through a specific set of competition and consumer protection rules.

Since 1 August 1998 petrol and diesel prices have been deregulated and wholesalers and retailers are free to set their own prices based on market conditions. However, on 17 December 2007 the Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Competition and Consumer Affairs, the Hon Chris Bowen MP, directed the ACCC to formally monitor prices, costs and profits relating to the supply of unleaded petrol products in the petroleum industry in Australia.
The ACCC has acknowledged the substantial increase in Australian diesel prices that has occurred in recent months in its Media Release issued 26 May 2008 [ACCC focuses on soaring diesel prices]. The ACCC continues to monitor international benchmark prices and retail price movements on a daily basis across capital cities and country towns as directed by the Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Competition and Consumer Affairs, Mr. Chris Bowen.
A significant factor contributing to diesel prices being higher than petrol prices in Australia in recent months is that the international benchmark price for diesel has increased relative to the international benchmark price for petrol. Over the period January 2008 to late April 2008 the price of Singapore Gasoil has been around US$15 per barrel (or Australian 11 cents per litre) higher than the price of Singapore Mogas 95 Unleaded.
Movements in fuel prices in Australia tend to follow international benchmarks. The benchmark for diesel is the spot price of Singapore Gasoil (with 50 parts per million sulphur content). These benchmarks have recently hit all time high levels, as a result of increased international demand. The benchmark for petrol is the spot price of Singapore Mogas 95 Unleaded, which is refined petrol and not crude oil. There is generally a time lag of around one to two weeks between changes in international prices and changes in retail prices, due to the averaging formula used by refiners in Australia when setting their wholesale prices.
The ACCC has also released a booklet Understanding petrol pricing in Australia – Answers to some frequently asked questions, which aims to help consumers to understand petrol pricing in Australia. I have attached a link to this publication for your convenience:
      http://www.accc.gov.au/content/item.pht ... ooklet.pdf.
Thank you for contacting the ACCC, I trust this information is of interest.

        Re: fuel prices

Woolworths is currently offering a 19c/L discount for customers who hold an Everyday Rewards Card and spend $310 or more in any Woolworths or Safeway Supermarket.

Offer is valid from Monday 1st December until Sunday 7th December 2008. You can spend $310 in a single transaction or across the whole week.

There is a limit of one fuel saving e-voucher per card holder. Your fuel saving e-voucher will be loaded at 10am on Thursday 11th December. This offer excludes purchases of liquor, cigarettes and WISH Gift Cards.

No, I am not affiliated with Woolworths in any way. But if you already shop at Woolies, this could potentially save you about $30 on a complete Prado fill-up. And any extra money in your pockets leading up to Xmas has to be a good thing, right? 8)

Maybe it's only a NT offer?

I received an email today from Woolworths offering an extra 4 cents off if I spent $30.00 or more in the fruit and veg dept.

Its an offer for registered Everyday Rewards cardholders only. I understand that this is the alternate program to FlyBuys.

So with the world economy slowing should we expect to see further drops in diesel prices as demand decreases? Lets hope so, some small consolation for the turmoil the world is in.

Noticed diesel for 139.9cpl today, lowest i've seen it for a while

I was at Gem Tree in the NT on Sunday and the price for diesel was $2.15/litre. No unleaded available as the pump was covered up. Needless to say I am glad I have a Prado with extended fuel tank range.

                    Re: fuel prices

Well like normal NT fuel prices are stagnating at higher prices than compared to other areas of the country. Just filled up and the price of diesel is 152.9c/litre, unleaded is 122.9c/litre.
