  • Tropical Cyclone Oswald - Qld floods 2013

Given the weather... That the scariest sound is your neighbour asking to borrow your chainsaw!

Absolutely hissing down. "Hey do you have a chainsaw?" "Yes, why?" "Big tree has come down over the road, going to have to chop it up to get through (dead end road). So can I borrow it?" "No." "I will come out and see if I can pull it out of the way." "No chance, it's huge!"

Got out there and sure enough the road is completely blocked. The tree was slippery as and fell in a heap of clay and long grass. More onlookers than actually live here. Breaking tiny branches off here and there. So I asked all the cars to get out of the way and finally backed up and chucked the beast in low range and we pulled branch by branch off to get to the trunk. Had to shoo kids away from the front of the car when dragging the bits and three times stopped completely to get those who wanted to be in the thick of it out of the way. Um people have you ever seen what happens when a rope snaps? Some carefully selected adjectives and back to work. Had to chop two limbs off to spin the trunk around, grabbed the proffered axe. First time anyone angry has ever used it I think. Head ended up in a horse paddock. Grabbed my axe (chainsaw carefully locked away) and finished the job. At least one neighbour had the good grace to say, wow you can use an axe. There was no way using the saw would have been safe with the rain and the people and how the tree was lying. The tree was all twisted up and the footing uneven. Once all pulled to the roadside I started the saw to trim off the bits poking out in the road, oops have to wait while the cars all drive back home, out to the shops or some other urgent world saving errand. 10 minutes people, oh forget it. Idiots wandering around just to see what would be done. I am surrounded by idiots! Help! Please?

In all seriousness though mate I do feel for all the people up north who have been pummelled once again by Mother Nature. Especially all those whose livelihoods are affected. FNQ, Rocky, Gladstone, Bundy & Gympie and all other outlying areas i haven't mentioned, are all experiencing yet another shitty storm season. And as you said mate, the only ones really profiting from all of this are the insurance companies who continue to post huge profits!!!

Yes we do but on the other side of Beaudesert Rd (Calamvale/Parkinson) it is all out and has been since yesterday afternoon. How did Samford fare?

We have no electrons other than those we generate ourselves. Few trees down. Lots of chainsaw action next weekend. Creeks up. Usual stuff. Power off sine yesterday early morning and won't be on until tomorrow pm.

Cancelled work tomorrow. Office will be ok but roads will be a problem. Carpark will get about 1m of water through it on current predictions.

I just watched some embryo on a news channel suggest that the current weather in QLD was caused by " global warming / climate change". I knew I wouldn't be long. NO ..... ITS' WEATHER IN THE TROPICS!. Cyclones happen ....that's life.

Some of the TV footage and other photos taken of the situation here in Bundy show some incredible amounts of water flooding the city.
Truely is a frightening experience for a large portion of the population.

I work in Milton Brisbane, just had a phone call to say don't come into work tomorrow.
My office is OK (sandbagged) but the access roads are the problem.
Evidently the crunch time for Brissy will be around midday-ish tomorrow.
Feel for everyone in Bundy and other areas up north who are getting a hell of a lot more problems than the capital.

In the scheme of things we have it easy. Lots of rain so the ground is sodden, lost about a dozen trees and had to clear two off our road in, no power since 06:00 yesterday. And the sound of generators fills the valley. I have just enough electrons to keep the fridge and freezer cold, run the water pump and that is it. But we aren't going to flood. Or starve. And in a week it will be just history for us.I am only watching snippets of news using the trailer aux battery and inverter but the Fraser Coast is in a bad bad way. We were up there before Christmas and again a couple of weeks ago. So sad people have lost everything, and some their lives. So sad.

Just got a text from a mate whose house is in Nth Bundy. They left late last night to stay with friends and left the family dogs on the top verandah of their 2 storey home where they thought they'd be safe and have just been told that water is now just over the verandah with the waters still rising. Everyone very upset....
