Given the weather... That the scariest sound is your neighbour asking to borrow your chainsaw!
Absolutely hissing down. "Hey do you have a chainsaw?" "Yes, why?" "Big tree has come down over the road, going to have to chop it up to get through (dead end road). So can I borrow it?" "No." "I will come out and see if I can pull it out of the way." "No chance, it's huge!"
Got out there and sure enough the road is completely blocked. The tree was slippery as and fell in a heap of clay and long grass. More onlookers than actually live here. Breaking tiny branches off here and there. So I asked all the cars to get out of the way and finally backed up and chucked the beast in low range and we pulled branch by branch off to get to the trunk. Had to shoo kids away from the front of the car when dragging the bits and three times stopped completely to get those who wanted to be in the thick of it out of the way. Um people have you ever seen what happens when a rope snaps? Some carefully selected adjectives and back to work. Had to chop two limbs off to spin the trunk around, grabbed the proffered axe. First time anyone angry has ever used it I think. Head ended up in a horse paddock. Grabbed my axe (chainsaw carefully locked away) and finished the job. At least one neighbour had the good grace to say, wow you can use an axe. There was no way using the saw would have been safe with the rain and the people and how the tree was lying. The tree was all twisted up and the footing uneven. Once all pulled to the roadside I started the saw to trim off the bits poking out in the road, oops have to wait while the cars all drive back home, out to the shops or some other urgent world saving errand. 10 minutes people, oh forget it. Idiots wandering around just to see what would be done. I am surrounded by idiots! Help! Please?
