It was only a matter of time given the exit of Holden and Ford. The parts suppliers would also have either been pulling the pin or raising their prices to cover the dwindling customer base. Not sure what those suppliers are all going to do now unless they diversify or can develop new export markets.

Given us Prado owners drive Japanese made cars we can hardly complain. I feel for the workers and their families though, thousands of new jobs don't just magically appear overnight.

I wonder at what stage the govt may consider removing the imported car tariffs [tax] that we pay to protect the local car industry seeing as we won't have a local car industry post 2017.

I can see it now. A Prado adjacent to a Great Wall in the same assembly line of a Chinese factory.

It already is, part of a JV same as Auto Alliance with Ford and Mazda.

Very sad day indeed but the writing was on the wall, we are just to expensive. I doubt the govt will drop the import or luxury duties, they will need it more then ever now to cover this loss.

I feel very sorry for all affected by the Mitsi, Ford, GM and now Toyota closures.

                  Hello all,

We who do not work in the auto industry should look at ourselves and our jobs, wont be long before we are all out of work because we cost too much and then we wont have cash to buy anything, either locally made or imported. Canberra produces nothing at all, why do we buy their spin on whats good for us.

If Tony gets his act together he should be able to come up with an idea and not simply an ideology to keep the country solvent. He seems to know how to shut down industry but no idea on what comes next.

I dont know what to do, thats why we have leaders. Perhaps we need better leaders.

                  regards

                  Ross

I don't think much blame can be levelled at Abbott. The closure of Toyota, Holden & Ford have been in the pipeline for at least 3 years. The main problem impacting them is the cost of labour. From information I have, the workplace entitlements have blown out, to be much higher than is found in other industries - things like paid days off every couple of weeks etc. The union was asked to back down on some of the entitlements, and refused. The blame here lies squarely on greedy unionists, not on the government.

No problem, no jobs no union - simple really.

It will be interesting to see if the government gets rid of the protectionist legislation on imports.

Workers always seem to get the blame, too higher wages benefite's etc,
We have higher cost of living here compared to China, Thailand etc, we've fought
Over time for better conditions & now they are being eroded, true some Unions
Have stuffed it up for the ordinary worker but they have also saved us from greedy Companies/ Bosses etc
I work for a non union company, I don't get over time loadings etc & no pay rise for over 3 years
But all the Bills etc keep rising! Lets all take pay cuts, but they'll still get rid of manufacturing in Aus.

What about sticking with models of cars that were of declining interest way past their use by date, less sales = less revenue
