Unfortunately in a court of law your GPS reading wouldn't count and not everyone owns a GPS.

Why is it that so many drivers think they are the police and try to enforce what they think is the law. They need to take a chill pill and leave enforcement to those who have the right.

Not sure if your post was directed at me but it quotes my text. Just to be clear I'm not trying to be the police, just offering an explanation as to why someone might be driving just a bit below the posted speed limit.

        • Virgin maxtrax got molested....

I've been reading posts over last couple of days "helping" stranded 4wd with your own recovery gear only to be left out of pocket $$$ wise.

Reminds me of a situation a couple of months ago, took a day trip with family north of Perth to the pinnacles, great day exploring seeing the sites, called into Hangover bay, cooked up snaggers at the free facilities , kids swimming etc. decided then to walk south towards the point and back before heading back to perth before dark. 200m up the beach came across a hilux driven by a young local (lancelin FC plates) who had decided the beach had run out and turn straight up into the low bush were no tracks and got bogged. There he was digging the diff by hand to get out. - thought you goose why didn't you turn around instead of ripping up the bush were there was a another 300m to get back onto the inland track.
Walked to the point and there was a
CALM vehicle who asked if is that your car - no just sight seeing he seems in trouble but seems a local - they took off on the inland track (suppose to help) We walked back and there he was still trying to get it out, that's when the wife said " hey you got maxtrax might help?"
Nah it's Ok CALM should be giving him a dressing down soon and get him out (saw a winch on front of bull bar) anyway we got to head back to Perth....
Got back to the car park - and the CALM vehicle was there not interested in helping him
So the delemna - spend a lot of time to help the goose who was doing the wrong thing/ wreck my recovery equipment - with authorities already highlighted to the problem

Decided the idiot needed to learn a lesson and left him to it

Don't get me wrong - in an isolated area were you know they might be in BIG trouble or risk to lives , no problem glad to help as they would to - but an inconvenience to some people just might think twice about doing it again - but some think not....

And being on a few WA PP day trips - they have always helped me out when I've got into trouble a few times - but this why we get out together to explore, converse and get back home safe

          • You could have every conceivable bit of recovery gear in and on your car - all shiney and new, unused. But, when we come across the un-prepared idiots out there why not use your gear for the very purpose it was designed for. You'll be saving some jerks arse, but at the same time you'll be practising with your kit. What's the point of having it and not using it? Sometimes shit happens and a strap may break or you lose a couple of nobblies off your maxtrax. It's not exactly deliberate damage. Get over it. It's not the end of the world. We're all out there to enjoy the fresh air and the scenery from our beloved fourbies right? And who knows, maybe one day you might need a helping hand.

Hi Fido. No it was not directed at you at all. It was directed at those who think others are doing the wrong thing and its their responsibility to point it out to them (usually by driving below the limit and not allowing others to drive at the actual limit). I accept your explanation that they thought they were at the limit, but its not their prerogative to slow others even if they are driving at 50km above. That should be left to the police.

If I have offended anyone by these comments - I'm, sorry

This drives me nuts. It is Australian road rules to keep left unless overtaking at speeds above 80 km/h. So there's no excuse even if the speedo is showing 100 and they're doing 95.

I had an old neighbour really upset she'd been pulled over and ticketed for doing it. Her excuse to the cop was "They all drive too fast on that stretch of road. I was sitting in the right lane to make them slow down". He wasn't amused

I knew a few traffic cops in the UK. They used to pull people over a lot for sitting in the outside lane. The reasoning being that driving slowly in that lane, holding people up is likely to cause more accidents, because it frustrates others drivers and they end up doing stupid things, or causing road rage. UK road rules are a bit harsher though - Keep left at ALL times unless overtaking and overtaking on the left is illegal except in slow moving traffic/roadworks etc.

I agree Dave, it's better to help because one day you'll need it, or your kids when they start out. It's just frustrating when you spend all the time learning how to use your vehicle and your recovery gear and all the money buying it and then you help out someone too lazy to do the same and they don't listen to you. In my case it was a guy in his wifes new pathfinder, road pressures in the softest sand I;d ever seen, not a singe bit of recovery gear and when I set the maxtrax for him I stood beside his window and told him not to spin the wheels. If it doesn't crawl out, stop and we'll reposition. First thing he did was floor it. If people were genuinely willing to learn, I'd be more sympathetic. I still help when I see someone stuck but as I carry multiple recovery options, I generally try to use the ones they can't break like a shovel or a winch. It's slower, but what's the hurry? A few extra minutes in the outdoors is not much of price to pay.

                    • I sorta do agree with Kimboprado here. He was driving somewhere where he shouldn't be. If he was on a designated track then sure but it's yobbos like him that drive where they shouldn't that gets tracks closed. It's also those people that should get fined.

I helped some guys out at South Ngkala Rocks a few years ago with my dads Maxtrax. Never been used and these guys just shredded the nobs with their huge 35's to pieces. Sitting their spinning their wheels for ages on them. Me and another random passing by were the only 2 with recovery equipment. Everyone else (about 6-7 4wd's in total) had jack shit.

But is that what some people (I use that term loosely) think? She'll be right, someone will come by soon and they'll help us

                        • Just torch the car where it lies. That will always grab some one's attention. They'll come by sooner, or later. Well, that's what some people that I know rely on.

I guess it's also a socio-economic thing?? To a % of people, Prado owners are latte double expresso coffee ponces! A lot of us will have taken our education further than others (not sounding sanctimonious). There maybe an element of di** swinging to have no gear (and will possibly be on the welfare too). I mean some of the gear is not cheap....just saying..
