I hate to get all technical here, but hey...I'm an ichthyologist, so...

it's not a piranha! First evidence is that they live in Sth America, and that sure as hell looks like africans holding the fish. Secondly, the largest species of piranha doesn't get anywhere near that size. And piranha teeth are very different to that.

So, it is an African Tiger Fish. And a bloody beauty, I might add.
http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/Spec...ry.php?id=4479 for info and more pics

I have fishing photos at home, so will post some tonight - including one of a piranha I caught in the Ecuadorian Amazon - true!

Fishnut is right but to get more specific it looks like the Goliath Tiger Fish that comes from the Congo River system in West Africa and not the smaller species from the Zambezi River System where the current angling record stands at around 16kg I think.

When it first happened there was an archer fish attached to the second set of trebles flipping around, which is why it happened.
Pain wasn't that bad. I tried to push it through an cut the barb off but couldn't force it enough. Mate stepped in and also strugled. Must have been trying to push through something tough. Finally removed it to keep fishing and caught some lovely fish that day.
That was done in the Escape river. Mate pinned me in the back of the leg the day before in the Olive river which was much less of a problem.

My old man was out on a fishing charter a few years back and was sitting there in the boat 8) when suddenly he saw his sunnies  being cast out into the water! The fella at the front of the boat hooked them with his lure (whilst still on his face) and sent them out to the crocks. He said he never felt a thing, pretty freaky hey. They got hooked on one of the arms..

He was very lucky it wasn't his eye ball!

Thats all par for the course with lures. I have been pinned 3 times now with a fish still attached and had to negotiate the situation. The first time was a barra and all 3 points stuck in two fingers and in the webbing. I spent a while in the emergency department that night. Ever since I carry scalpels in my tackle kit.

Want to go fishing with me??

Tried them and my catch rate went to about 10% over a 2 week fishing holiday. I can handle the scaple and other removal tricks if I have to.
