Heard a little rumour that the new tunnels in Brisbane may well have number plate cameras on entry and exit and that if your travel time is too short than you may just get a letter in the post. If you know what I mean.

Here's a link to something a lot of people forget about when driving at night.
Quite often at high speed, by the time you've seen the problem up ahead you've already run out of braking distance.

Just come back from 4000k's in Canada and it was "refreshing" to see the authorities attitude to speeding over there. The posted limits were typically 50, 100 and 110 k's depending on the terrain, and 99% of drivers (myself included after the first day or so) would add 10% on top of that, depending on conditions. There was only one street I went down, next to a school, that had a fixed camera set up.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that the local authorities didn't have a policy of trying to flog the locals for every little transgression unlike here in QLD where it seems there's a camera on every corner. 99.99% of the drivers I encountered in Canada were driving to the conditions, were extremely courteous to other drivers and even the truckies had the tolerance and respect of the ordinary motorists. In short, a delight to sahre the road with.

I spoke to an RCMP officer at a licence check in some pi$$ant town we went through with regard to the speed signs and he said that for people people going over the posted limit "under 9, you're fine, over 9, your mine!".

Don't get me started on the beauty of being able to do a right turn on a red light after stopping, sheer joy in terms of keeping the traffic moving.

When the NT had open speed on Hwys, drivers had no pressure on them to do a certain speed and driving was a pleasure.

Since limits were introduced, drivers are forced to try and drive at 130km, some people cannot for various reasons.

All Highways should be open limits and governments should adopt the cash for scrap (no cars more than 10 old on the road like they do overseas).

But more importantly use all the money (5c a litre approx) that is allocated from fuel taxes for roads to fix, design and make correctly.

Good in theory but.... is the government going to adequately compensate me for my 98 Prado with all my bells and whistles that I've installed. Also, are the manufactures going to come to the party and make modern cars to older spec/abilitys rather than continually softening everything down.

It's a 'Speed Limit' not a 'must do speed' so they still have the option of doing the speed they feel comfortable at.
I know I have said earlier that I get frustrated that I can never get 'up to' the speed limit in most local 70, 80 and 90 zones but I'm also one of these people that unless I need to be somewhere sooner rather than later I'll sit at 100 in the 110 zone BUT I'll be in the left lane or if it's a single carriage way I'll go the speed limit until I can let people pass when I have an opportunity and then I might slow down.

Did all of these 'open speed limit' roads have multiple lanes, 60 - 100 meters between traffic directions?? I'd say they were accidents waiting to happen and it's a good move slowing people down a little bit. After all, how many of actually stop every few hours for a 15 min break....

agree there is not a thing un road worthy on my 99 Prado , why should it be recycled and possibly turned into a Datsun :shock:

Mark Skaife just presented some interesting stuff regarding speed, young drivers and safer driving on the Sunday Night show on Seven network.

Less variation in speed limits, that is, they believe aussie drivers are too busy watching out for every change in the speed limit and this distracts them from other road hazards. Higher speeds on better built,open roads and highways. They showed the German highways and autobahns where minimum speed limits apply (125kph). Younger (newer) cars for younger (novice) drivers reduced road toll by 16.5%.

Of course, we are too focused on excessive (bad) speeds and drivers are too distracted by mobile phones, navigators, eating burgers etc.

They separate the heavy road transport from the motorways. We dice with road trains up to seven trailers in length. Their roads are smooth with multiple lanes and barriers. Our roads are lumpy and worn out by big trucks, with broken shouders, gravel edges and no separation between lanes.

We've got a long way to go.

The trouble with Australia is that our distances are phenomenal. Case in point. Tell many Europeans you spent 20+ hours in a plane to come visit them and they'll faint. Relate to people over there you spent 7 hours in a car to get to your favorite fishing spot, stayed there overnight, then returned home the next day, and you'll be viewed sideways as a complete lunatic. While Europeans do certain things extremely well, you can't simply apply their logic here. Don't get me wrong, we can look at what they do and and get some damn good ideas, but the fact remains it'd cost something phenomenal to fit Oz out with multiple lane highways. Maybe though, we could be a bit smarter with that cash. Separate the heavy traffic from the 'day to day' traffic? Now you're talking. Bung it all on rail. We're supposed to be a smart country aren't we? So why buggarise around with trucking stuff all over the place? Heaven forbid, we might even be able to get passengers on those trains! Now, make that a bullet train and just see how quickly you can de-centralise our overstuffed cities. I'm looking at 1/2 a million to get a simple 3x1 house relatively close to the action in Perth. What a joke! Get trucks off the road. Design the roads for 120km/h+ speeds and reap the rewards!

Here's a heretical thought. Speed does not kill. Stupid drivers kill. A person wipes themselves out against a tree on a 60km/h road as happened recently in Perth. Immediately people complain that the road has been poorly designed. What a complete load of stinking rubbish! The road was designed for people doing the right thing, actually going 60km/h, and actually driving properly. You drive up that road at 120km/h and the road design is NOT at fault for the person's death. The person's own stupidity is where the fault lies. You strap a v12 to a shopping trolley and try racing it at 300km/h. You're using the shopping trolley WAY past what it was ever designed to be used for. Do you blame the shopping trolley manufacturer for your death? No. You were stupid.

How about license restrictions for repeat speeding offenders? You speed too much, and you get a Nissan Micra to drive.

Speed is not the killer it's made out to be. Thuggery is. Hooliganism is. Don't give a damn attitude is. Bad parenting is. lame consequences. Not enough resources for Police. Driver training. Drug culture. Speed is the easy answer. The easy way out. Sure, lets all drive at 40km/h and make our lives a misery. The current road death stats point to a much bigger cancer in our society in my opinion, and it's all stuff that nobody wants to talk about. Sweep it under the carpet and blame speed. Nope, doesn't wash with me.
