Not quite correct, unless said upgrade includes OEM auto levelling and headlight washers..

HID's are not to be retro fitted to a vehicle thats never had them as referred to in ADR's because it hasn't gone through stringent testing.
However, the 150 series - VX and above come with HID's so you could retrofit models below ie GXL and GX if you use the exact same part number HID that is used in the VX and above.

For a standard headlight like in a Prado GXL 120 series, if you replace a normal globe with a HID globe, due to headlight having a larger reflector than official HID installs like on BMW's etc, the light spread will dassel on coming road users. So in other words you cannot have them in a Prado GXL 120 series. Plus it breaches ADR regulations.

HID's can either be auto level on manual. With manual adjustment, you have to ensure the "cutoff" (the height of the projected beam from left to right is as per ADR) is correct.

And finally, the intensity should not exceed 6000k as a rule of thumb (you go from white light into blue and purple). You lose distance in light projection anyhow. most cars that come from factory with HIDs are around 4300K.

You can have high beam HID's in a Prado but not low beam or any other vehicle for that matter.

      This is Australia wide.

      "
Thanks for clearing that up Winniliss. Looks like you’ve done your homework. I think I’ll be crossing a HID headlight conversion off the build-up list, far too much trouble.

      Thanks again

The manufacturer has done their testing with a specific brand of HID's. If you put in a different brand, technically it has to be the same spec. At the end of the day if unsure ask your Vic roads or RTA or MVR for advice before spending heaps of your hard earn cash.

They say headlight washes but, have you ever seen them on the Toyota Camry's etc... You would assume its a water nozzle or similar.

I've a VW with HID low beams. It's got washers but no levelling motors. Must be something negotiable at compliance time.

a family member has a current toyota with HID's.
they are fitted with a pop up washers for each headlight.
they only spray water on headlights.

the 120 series sov bullbar has these locations pressed into the underside of bar, probably an overseas models has them.
it's easy to hook up washers for headlights. fit your old washer jets and plumd to rear washer line (i've been thinking about doing it for a while),
but for me with GXL, not sure that poly-airs will suffice as auto-levelling

You can have manual adjustment just so long as the "cut off" or the top of the light beam is a certain height as to not dazzle on coming road users.

How does one get an engineer's cert for oversized tyres? And what does it involve? A check on the speedo?

                        Re: Defected....

                        Well defect is removed.

A lot of b@llshit delaing with them in the beginning as appointments were a 2 week wait.. I went on the standby list and only waited 10 minutes and cost half price.
I did make a lot of noise about being defected for tyres when they were already complianced, Said Police officer is going to be getting a bit of a word from above and some retraining it appears..

When I drove in the shed 3 inspectors came straight over exchanging puzzled looks and then one said, "WTF did they get you for???" they all shook their heads when I said Tyres originally (Kinda forgot to mention HID's)...
Anyway, Fatboy bulbs passed straight away, no problems.
Had the HID igniters and wiring all still sitting there, he spied the 3 pin plug and said, "took em out did you" I just smiled. he laughed and went "no worries". Had a good chat, if I had headlight washers I would probably baffle my way past most cops out there he said, it meets the 2 parameters required, Auto levelling (Not manual like poly airs) and washers. I dont know if I will refit them, cant be buggered at this point. I do have some 4300K globes there in HID I "might" play with them one day.

Tyres, no issues whatsoever.. Certification paperwork got me thru without a second look, same as suspension. Only thing they checked was a 1 minute look underneath, a comment of "Nice... - Bilsteins". they did check wheel bearings (front) and ball joint play. That was it.
He did say if I didnt have the certification they probably would have defected me for them if they were having a bad day.

Ran it over the brake rollers, all perfect. They then moved me to the end parking area.. buh bahh..

                        Tint check.. Damn it..

My rears were (ha) 8 minimum should be 35... oops.. Fronts were 20.. Should be 35.... oops again.. Made me strip it all there and then and I could have defect lifted.. Man it is bloody hot without tint !!!!! Booked in to redo it all on Saturday, same grade going on again, which is 35 on rears (with privacy glass) and 20 on front again.

Guy was nice enough to put the meter over the standard glass for me.

Fronts 90- Rears - (ha) 25 already.. so illegal from factory.. but passable as a new vehicle.. Some subarus are apparently 20 on privacy factory glass!

The spotlights all passed without any issues, he did say, "your middle one doesnt illuminate?" I replied, its illegal if it does isnt it? He said yes. Having it sitting there is not illegal but may just draw attention of the locals again.. you can have it fitted basically.

All in all a fairly painless experience. Thank god!

Well I hope those responsible for the incorrect defect notice are held to account. As a member of the public you have no choice but to book into the pits and pay the fee. If the defect notices are lifted and your vehicle cleared without issue you should pay exactly nothing (in my opinion). You should not be there in the first place. In fact, you should be reimbursed for your time lost.

So wait... Your window tints were not compliant from the factory??? So the second you drove out of the saleyard you were driving a defectable vehicle? And that's supposed to be your fault?? Talk about injustice........

I have a lot of respect for the police. A lot. But if they do not fully understand the defect (or otherwise) notice they are giving you then it should not be given, in my opinion. Should you be defected or not?? If they truly do not know then you should not be defected.

theres some wierd ADR rule whereby new imported vehicles can have darker tints from factory than if you went and got aftermarket tints. thats why you'll see a brand new Kluger (for e.g.) that has almost black rear windows but you will never see a new commodore with tints as dark. apparently it can cause some people headaches come pink slip time 5 yrs down the track...
