    Re: Australia Day

I'm heading off to do the Robe to Beachport run on Monday morning. I hope, even if somewhat miraculously, the erosion problem has sorted itself out and nothing is closed....

I have been told by locals that the sand is softer than it has been in many years and that the local Ranger is doing sometimes 3 recoveries a day!
12-14psi is said to be the norm for tyre pressure at the moment.

    Cheers,
    AJ

        Re: Australia Day

Here are a few snaps from the weekend down around Beachport. Sorry but they arn't real great.

        5 Mile Drift

Even had my wife have a go at driving down and up. My kids laughed when I drove but said they where going to die when my wife did :P

        Up at Stinky Beach

As we were driving up to Stinky beach I found out part of this was a Nudist beach. A big fella was proudly walking along the beach. we saw him again later doing a bit of Slip, Slop, Slap, but it looked like a little too much slapping.

We headed south of South End along the beach. The sand here was really soft. One fella running Coopper STTs had them down to around 9PSI cold and he still got caught. We did struggle through one spot. The aim was to get to Carpenters Rocks but we only got as far as Lake Bonnie Lookout

We then headed up north again for a play on 9 Mile Drift. This was a spectacular place but the photos I have do not describe it well.

Comming back from 9 Mile Drift, one of the vehciles took a curve on the wrong side and started to slide down into a ditch. Couldn't do any real major damage as it was all sand but I think he was sweating a bit. Look at the angle of the falg and imagine what it should be.
        .

In the group we had some MaxTrax with us (two sets I think). They did get used but most of the time getting your tyre pressure right we see you get out of trouble. A good shovel is a must and another option can be a bucket of water to help consolidate the sand. Don't drive over the vegetation as you will just wreck the environment and see another great destination shut down.

After getting back i went to over lay the track from the GPS over the tracks we took last you. Found out the track log had stuffed up, a while back, and had recorded nothing since October 6th last year. Bugger, but not the end of the world.

Doesn't seem fair. Last two years I have been in OZ for Independance Day & in the US for the past 2 Australia Day's.

Can't I get some fireworks anywhere!!

                      Re: Australia Day

This morning took the family to the shops to get some groceries and beer for tonight's BBQ, and also to have a coffee together.

As we were driving there over a slight hill, we had three F/A-18 Hornets scream overhead at about 100m (no kidding) above our heads! The kids (and I) almost jumped out of our seats. Gees they were low.

It's good to live in a free country where such sights are only seen when celebrating our country, not fighting for it.

                        Re: Australia Day

Hmm, we did something similar to last year with a few close friends. Spent 4 nights at Robe and headed back this morning via the beach as much as possible to 42 mile crossing. Was a good alternative to driving the other side of the Coorong.

Cracked open the camper trailer to air it out after the 2010 GTG ... (I know, I know... should have been done long ago ops
While it was set up I got everything squared and perfect and marked the pole extensions so no guesswork next time.
Trouble shot a few things on the CT while listening to the cricket on the radio.

Oh, and before that played with PlayDoh and building blocks with the little bundle of energy  ... while the missus was at work and finally got to watch another DVD of the Gall Boys collection I got for Xmas when said bundle of energy when down for a mid day nap.
