However with a current lead time of about 3.5 months to get a container on site (it has to go through quarantine and a host of other hurdles) it has been anything but easy (longest time to get 1 container on site is 8 months).

Daily routine is to start at 5:15am for our morning meeting and then we have a pre-start with the crew at 6:30am. From there I'll run around the job like a crazy chook chasing the site transport operations to make sure that what little of our gear has arrived is sent to the right area. Have rather freindly and warm discussions  with the client about our wants and needs for plant, equipment and materials. Then I might launch myself into a heap of reports that have to be generated for our company and the client on a daily basis. Try and track gear that has been lost within the clients system and tell them where it is with the spies that I have available.

Generally finish up around 5:30pm but can go till about 7pm when there are lots of container movements on the Island.

Try and get a game or 3 badmitton in as well just for laughs.

Do this every day for 26 days minimum and then get 9 day off for good behaviour.
On another forum I am a member of there are a few boys who are gearing up to go over. They have posted photos of all the plant being shrink wrapped on the back of low loaders, things like dozers, scrapers etc. fascinating stuff.

      Adam,

Yeah it's not too bad, certainly better now that it has ever been. Just got to try and convince them that cooking pototoes properly and keeping the hot food hot is really important. The food at the "fly" camp is certainly a notch above the "OWA" camp.

Yeah its a pretty good idea untill you have to unwrap it all then it becomes a major headache. We are now having to use empty containers as rubbish bins as there are nowhere enough skips on site to handle the amount of waste being produced. It is also from what I am told a rather large on-cost to have this done too. Thats why they try and containerise every thing that comes here.

Actually a low loader came up on a LCT the other day and they found some residual dirt on the packaging. Being a class 1 nature reserve sent the quarantine lads into a spin about this possible contamination. They wanted to sent\d it back to Dampier to be remeadiated but common sense prevailed and they unwrapped it on the barge and lifted off the machinery. Sent the lowloader and plastic back straight away. About a 6 hour process for the amount of dirt that you would be able to hold in one hand.

It's a bit extreme by sounds of things, but I can see method in their madness in trying to prevent any incoming nasties. We have to go through a full quarantine check every time we fly up here and back

I currently work in the yard next to mermaid marine where they load all the stuff for barrow. We often stare out the window and watch all the shrink wrapped stuff go past and play the "guess what that is" game. It provides hours of entertainment.

and to anwser Adams question from earlier - I did a series of shutdowns 6-7 years ago out at Telfer whilst based at Port Hedland.

Just got back from having to drive out to the WA desert for 2 days, then spent 2 days training some locals in ATV (quad bike) riding, followed by some camel shooting and exploring before the 2 day drive home. I had to contend with a lot of rain and mud and almost got stuck out there due to the road closures. And they pay me for doing this!

Chriso is it true that the LPg gas at the petrol station for the cars is the same gas as the BBQ gas and we just get taxed more for the BBQ gas ?
