Senior Planning Engineer.... I cannot remember the last time I went to work, I just have fun. I would do it for free. Basically a paid tourist. Australia, Seth Afrika, Middle East, SE Asia..... Started as a Mech Fitter in a little workshop in Brisbane. On the weekends I am the Stig.

I am an environmental scientist... but before you make your assumptions, the job title is partly deceiving.

The main tasks I do is shuffling paper, but occasionally I get to go out in the field and actually look at the environment that I'm investigating. This is almost always associated with a development of some type (i.e. person x wants to develop this block into y). There is so much information out there now that most people want you to just investigate existing information and manipulate it to draw new conclusions (hence, the majorly paperwork based role of my job). However, when I do go into the field, it is diverse experiences I get to have - from digging holes looking for acidic soils, to setting up traps to capture and record bats and other animals, to monitoring the quality of water in creeks, to supervising the installation of bores, to mapping trees and vegetation to bird watching.

However, when you think that someone is an 'environmental scientist' you think that they're a tree-hugging hippy trying to save the environment. That's pretty wrong for the private sector anyway (government environmental scientists are just that). My job entails looking at the environment on block X to see what Person Y has to do to satisfy Government Regulations so the Government will give them the approval to do the development. I am actually helping the developers!

There are a lot of dodgy environmental scientists out there that will 'look the other way' if they see an endangered species, or find a process that occurs that will prevent their client from developing their block the way they want to. I take some satisfaction in working with a company that will not do that and will report what we find, no matter the consequences.
Relating to 4WDing, When i go into the field, I get to see some spectacular places that many people are not allowed to go and only landowners get to see! Love my job because although I'm in the office most of the time, it takes me to some awesome places, and i'm not doing the same thing every day!

I manage a small trucking station. I unload the big trucks that come to the station and load small deliveries on smaller trucks and vans. I make sure we have all we need, be it pallet wrap, coffee, bulbs, automotive liquids, shipping papers, biscuits, gloves or anything we might need on hand.

I assist the drivers with easy maintenance like tire changes, keeping all the lights functional, greasing things and keeping the trucks clean. Oh yeah, I also get to talk to the customers, no-one calls when they´re happy, just when they have something to bitch about.

I am licensed to drive big trucks, tow trailers, drive a taxi and a bus, I have finished heavy equipment training and can practice on and get certified on everything from small forklifts to the biggest mining equipment. I am waiting for the right time to go back to school. I am about 1/3 done with marine mechanics, and after that I might study mechanical engineering, but I´m not sure I would want to go that route right after graduating marine mechanics. I might just want to work in ships or hydro- or steam electric power stations for a while, to make some money and to not get burnt out by school.

im a final year apprentice in Perth, training as a tool and die maker (high presicion engineering tradesman), but will have papers as a fitter and first class machinest, as toolmaking is not offered by the local colledges. so ill soon be qualified as both :P. my job involves the design, manufacture, installan, callibration and maintanence of production machinery. my employer specialises in roll forming machines, but also makes rubber molds, custom made hollow punches for mine wear mat, press tooling as well as general enginnering

also have experience in diesel mechanics and basic fabrication training,

so if its metal, i can make it :P from a shaft to a helical gear. im trained to do the lot.

I currently do three jobs.

During the week I'm looking after the computer systems for a large energy supplier. This involves mostly answering peoples questions on how to do X, or why Y won't work, but sometimes involves mucking around with the A/V can video conf. systems.

On weekends I'm a photographic trainer. Training the beginning enthusiasts on how to take better photographs.

And on top of all that I'm running my own photography business shooting everything from models, family portraits and weddings to events and even the Premier of Qld. The life of a photographer is varied and for a long time lacking in funds, but the work is interesting and it keeps me out and about doing something I enjoy.

Received confirmation of my promotion to Day Chief Electrician this morning!!!

Requires a transfer from the Stena DrillMAX to its sister ship the Stena Forth, and no more working in Brasil (I will miss the night life) - present location of the Forth is the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt and I will be crew changing out of either Cairo or Alexandria...

What fun...

I am unlucky in what i do i work for tjm so i have to put up with below cost price items for my prado from tjm or cost from other suppliers while talking to people about what i love its terrible but someone has to do it. :P
