  • October Long Weekend Ideas

All - I have scheduled the long weekend for a trip here in SA. Only problem is, I haven't really decided where to go!

    My current options are:
    1) Mallee Drive - this is one of those 'Victorian' iconic drives, unfortunately It loops through Big Desert and Murray Sunset NP.
    2) Grampians - plenty to do around there, although there is still several tracks closed due to flood damage
    3) Gawler Ranges

I am looking for something within about 5 hours from Adelaide, if you have any other options to add to my list for consideration, then please go ahead. That's the purpose of this post.

I have considered Goog's Track, and the wife is keen, but that would be a week and a half trip. I would leave Friday of the long weekend and go straight to Googs, do that for three days, then I would go to Lake eyre and Haligan bay, then down along the Oodnadatta Track, through to Lyndhurst, then up along Strezlecki track, take the PAR through the flinders, and come back down from there to Adelaide. Would be a hell of a trip this one...

Somebody make my mind up for me please!!!!

    Ian.

Whyalla...Mount Laura...excellent tracks of all levels of difficulty including one called the canyon...which really will test the Prados flex...lots of other stuff to do over there as well.

Melrose, camping in the show grounds and the track across the mountains...plus all the other lower Finders tracks.

Lindsay island, river land...fantastic creek camping and a bit of 4wding.

All the above within 5 hours of Adelaide.

        Which days the long weekend?

Rob - it depends on the final destination. Most likely I will go either Thursday night, or early Friday. I may go longer than the weekend, but if anyone else tagged along (i.e., MLC - you just can't get rid of that bloke ) they could leave whenever they wanted.

Gunnell - How many days will Mount Laura keep us entertained? Not really interested in doing much other than a little bit of relaxing in the evening, and plenty of tracks during the day.

Mt Laura will probably keep you happy for a full day but probably not much more. It's about the same general size as the Morgan quarry area but the tracks are a bit longer and there is some long steep stuff.

If your looking for the ...what can my car climb type tracks you will find it here..even the double locked mega flex vehicles will find entertainment here..but if you want scenic touring type driving it's not the place although there is some other good general tours in the area.

Personally much more exciting than Morgan but you will probably drive mostnof it in about 5 hours.

There is bush camping at point lowly about 20kms before you reach whyalla, one site even has toilets and showers.

Its starting to look like you're leading a trip of PP'ers, not going away with the wife Ian!

You might have to lock this thread down or I feel a convoy coming....

(yes im also watching this topic for selfish reasons!)

I will probably be in the riverland for 1/10, 2/10 & 3/10 - only just realised that is the long weekend.

Id be keen to head back to loveday 4x4 on the sunday but cant commit as yet, need that permission form signed and witnessed first!

Failing that guys im likely to be out but Mt Laura sounds pretty good and i'd be interested to see a trip report from there.
                  Cheers

Here is my preferred long weekend trip. If I lived in SA that is....

Duck across the Nullarbor and turn right at Perth. Head up a little track known by the locals as the CSR.
At the end of that little track, turn right and when you get to a little town by the name of Tennant Creek, turn right again and head home.

This would be my ultimate long weekend drive.

I know it isn't really a long weekend trip. I really would love to do the CSR some time though.
                          Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Myself, I am heading to Vic High Country again for the long weekend with my boys.

We are leaving on the Thursday and are meeting others at Cooma in the PM, and then heading home on the Tuesday.

                          Can't wait!!!

Heck its only Ians thread so why not hi-jack it. I was supposed to be doing the CSR this year but my 3 travelling companions all pulled out, so I shelved the idea. Next year is already out for me as I have commited to leading a trip elsewhere already but down the track I am keen to go and have a look. Some real advantages in going with other Prados as far as spares go!

As for me on the October long weekend, I am high tailing it for QLD and the GTG.

Had you thought about Saunders gorge Ian, might be too late to get in there.

Ngarkat CP South of Lameroo is good for some gentle offroading and a couple of great camp areas, Box Flat at the North end of the park or Rabbit island soak in the South are good camping spots.

Not much 4wdriving but good camping around this are (the Riverland) at Kataraptko, or Chowilla, from Chowilla a day trip up the old Wentworth road to Lake Victoria for a look is a good days drive if you don't mind a few corrugations.

5 hrs from Adelaide would get you to Rawnsley park I reckon, Arkapena 4WD track (key available at Rawnsley) is a good drive for 3-4 hours.

October long weekend next year I am thinking Googs, after the CSR trip fell through I thought about going October this year until I decided to head to the GTG.

                              Cheers Andrew
