  • CSR 2013 has anyone been up (or down) yet

I am due to head out for my CSR trip on 5th July 2013, and was wondering if any of you had been onthe CSR as yet and could give me current track conditions.

I am aware it's probably a tad early BUT no harm in asking, and I will keep an eye on this over the course of the next month.

    Thanks in advance

I'll talk to some people in Wiluna that I know. They had some rain last week but it usually dries up reasonably quickly. The Wiluna Shire can provide detailed updates on road conditions including CSR.

          Hi Mark

We will leave Wiluna on 6 July, so we will a week in front of you, but will take about 20 days, with a couple of 2 night stops, to do the stock route itself. Our party will consist of a Holden Rodeo, a Toyota Hilux, A Izuzu 4WD truck and a Toyota tray back.
What are you doing about refuelling along the stack route? We are planning to refuel at the aboriginal settlements.
          Its only 6 weeks now.

We should be around Wiluna at that time, not doing the CSR but will keep an eye out for you.

Based on that Ron we'll miss you......we hope to get to Kuna and fill there BUT have a back up plan of heading over to Cotton Creek if we are using more fuel than we thought....then will refuel at Bili at the other end, coming back to Wolfe Creek and then down the Tanamai to Alice Springs.

LIke most people we will probably over cater for fuel and roll into Kuna with a 1/3 of a tank left....I swear we could have almost gone back over the Simpson a few years ago when we arrived in Birdsville.

Yep it's running out fast for us as well, I leave Brizvegas 5th July....so correct we are a week behind you.

                Can't wait

If we miss you in Wiluna there is always a chance of running into each other at Cotton Creek as well, We are heading to Rudall River and might stop there for fuel as well. Normally we plan trips a year in advance but this is a last minute descision for us so still working through all the details.

You probably know what our rig looks like, White 120 with a bit of fruit and camper trailer swinging on the back.

                  Cheers Andrew

Andrew and Mark, when I did the CSR in 2010 we also went out to Rudal River NP - terrific.Queen Adelaide Baths was a great camp site We also went into Cotton Creek for fuel as a [not needed] precaution but they were shut for lunch which I think goes from about 11.30 to 2.30 so it may be worth phoning ahead to check opening times. The road west of there was terrific but Well23?/Georgia Bore? to there was badly corrugated. Fuel consumption on the bottom half of the CSR was much better then the top half due to fewer and smaller dunes. Neil

Did a bit of work on the itinerary yesterday and the current plan has us going through Wiluna on the 11th, a day before you get there Mark. Anyway that's only a plan and things may change once we get out there, lots of dirt for us to get there so no guarantees about anything.

                      Cheers Andrew

                        Hi all,
We (2 Prado's& 1 Pootrol) will be doing the CSR late June & July. Travelling Sydney to meet others in Canberra, then travel to Kalgoorlie for 2 nights on 27 June.
we will re-fuel at Wiluna 29 June with our first camp at North Pool that night. Will be at Kunawaritji for fuel & re-stock on 10 July; end up at Halls Creek on 22 July. Then down the Tanami to Alice, then home via Dalhousie Springs. PM for a copy of our itinerary.
One question...what is the preferred method of carrying full jerry cans on the roof rack...standing up or laying down with filler upwards?
Sold the Prado. Now FJ Cruiser

Jon, I carried 6 inside rachet strapped down where the 2nd seat was removed, -used the seat belt mountings with brackets attached. Only possible if 2nd row not needed [ it weighs about 60 kg all up.] This keeps the weight low. See my trip report in ,I think, Sept 2010- search CSR.Each jerry was tested by being half filled and then left to lie in the sun for an hour to find leaks- any leaks and it was chucked - 2 were.If you have to use the roof I would have them on their side with the filler up to keep the weight as low as possible THEN every 100 km or so[ ie about each night] I would empty one into the main tanks to get that weight off the roof ASAP.I use an old stocking across the funnel as a filter - works a treat.Have a great trip - take your time and you will break nothing - rush and you will. Neil

Jon, I use a 150 Prado with a 150 Litre Tank.....I am taking 3 jerries which we will fill in Wiluna (possibly Kalgoorlie to save money) and sit on top of the Prado on the roof rack standing UP (use ratchet straps to hold them down). The aim is to get that fuel in ASAP, so at least one on first day and another the second....we'll then leave the third one (in the middle) as a spare...that way helps my mates if they were to run low.

I know everything about keeping the weight low BUT this worked well on the Simpson in 2011 and it can't be that much different....we take it VERY easy (bunch of "old farts") so no drama's I feel.

It suits my set up to have my camp gear in the back and on the top we'll have just the fuel, spare tyre and rim and the 4.5Hg Gas Bottle....everything else low down.

What a bugger Andrew, always enjoy your posts...anyway keep an eye out for a Silver 150, QLD rego with a Prado Point stickers...can't imagine there will be too many of those out there at the same time so "maybe" we can catch up for a XXXX Gold (GO QUEENSLAND) along the way!!

4.2mm rain at Wiluna yesterday - bugger all. Some more rain to the west. CSR reports heaps of people coming through with no problems so sounds good for travel. Cool clear nights, warm days 22 - 26 degrees.
