Thanks Russ. Unfortunately I can't view lcool forum threads as I don't have an account. I have given up tring to register. I tried about half a dozen times over the course of a few moths and haven't been able to get the registration approved by an admin. I don't know if my email address looks dodgy or if I answered the spambot questions incorrectly.

I registered in LCOOL forum and it was very easy with processing in a very short time. I don't think they need any special thing, just may be your web browser needs to be checked/refreshed.
IMO, if I change from Prado to LC, i will stick with Diesel Turbo only (factory is first, after market Turbo is second choice).Last edited by light5light; 10-02-2012, 10:32 PM.James

Can'o'worms = opened. Believe it or not, I have actually considered all the options.Originally posted by light5light View PostIMO, if I change from Prado to LC, i will stick with Diesel Turbo only (factory is first, after market Turbo is second choice).
As far as I'm concerned, the non-turbo Diesel 1HZ would be unbearable to drive after having owned a Petrol 90 series. I have not driven one yet (as the dealer couldn't even start the one I went to look at), but considering that even the Petrol 80 is noticeably slower than my Petrol 90, I am certain that the 1HZ would be an absolute slug. Its torque and power figures look completely gutless on paper. It is also $5000-6000 more expensive than a Petrol of the same age/ks etc
I think the 1HD-T would be only tolerable (compared to the Petrol), the low rpm toruqe would handle towing better than the Petrol and it has the lowest fuel bill any of the three engines.
The 1FZ-FE (4.5 petrol) has way more power than either of the other two engines and actually has more torque than both (at higher rpms) and has the highest fuel usage. From my research, all else being equal, you will pay roughly $12,000 more for a 1HD-T of the same age/kms etc. $12K is a lot of fuel and mods as far as I'm concerned.
Also one needs to consider that if they absolutely need the fuel range and towing performance of the 1HD-T (which I don't) that there are, at the time of writing this post, 40 factory Turbo Diesel 80s available on carsales.com.au and there are 159 Petrol 80s. Sure there are other websites to look for cars, but I think its a pretty good indication of how many more Petrols there are to choose from. Given how many Petrol 80s I've looked at now to find a good one, I think you'll have your work cut out trying to find a good TD.Declan: 1997 GXL 4.5 Auto 80 series on LPG, ARB bullbar, 2" OME lift, 32" MTZ, GME UHF, rear ARB locker, Kaymar spare wheel carrier

Good reference Declan, actually i had to say "IMO" with last reply, because I am using a caravan around 2T when full loads. With my current 90s, nothing is wrong or slow except crawling up hill.
I did also spent time to find out sth (also did come to Minchinbury one time for a test of Turbo LC 100). A good TD 100series now will cost no less than or around $30k for a reasonable good one at good mileage and condition. Comparing with Petrol, actually it will be a quite clear comparison as you made ~$12k or even more, but that's different story
Good luck on finding the right one.James

Good find there Russ, I tried to rejoin Lcool again last night, after attempting to change my email address with them nearly 5 years ago (& was promptly locked out), & received the confirmation email from them this morningOriginally posted by rags View PostDeclan
I not sure of your budget or desires but over at lcool classifieds there is this 80s that reads ok

Goodluck
Russ
That 80 series looks to be in great condition, shame it's in Adelaide.
Yes trying to get an 80 with factory turbo in good condition won't be easy but you never know....I suspect there are plenty of people keeping an eye out for you Declan
Good luck with the searching......Cheers,
Glenn

I can't make that promise kav. If I see a HDJ80R at the right price (read: same price as a Petrol - not gonna happen) then I'll buy it, purely for the fuel savings, but I'm not going to pay $12k more for said fuel savings.
I'm entirely open minded about the transmission. Auto is preferred as I'll be using it mainly for rock crawling but if I find a manual in good condition I wont turn it down, I'll just have to get extra high diff ratios (5.29:1 maybe).
As hard as it is for you to hear this kav, I am open to the idea of a GQ or GU patrol but under no circumstances will I buy a 3.0 TD Patrol (same goes for the Toyota CRD engines for that matter)Declan: 1997 GXL 4.5 Auto 80 series on LPG, ARB bullbar, 2" OME lift, 32" MTZ, GME UHF, rear ARB locker, Kaymar spare wheel carrier

I wouldn't write of the 3.0TD Patrol's entirely. GU IV's seem to ok, but anything older, just make sure you've got the cash for a V8 LS1 or LS2Originally posted by williade View Post.............but under no circumstances will I buy a 3.0 TD Patrol (same goes for the Toyota CRD engines for that matter)

Agreed, the later 3.0 is ok. I think mid 04 up is fine, however the engine by that stage already had the bad reputation and people still think they are bad therefore prices are down when they shouldn't be.Originally posted by glen_ep View PostI wouldn't write of the 3.0TD Patrol's entirely. I would buy an early petrol one and do a swap for the TD42T, but that's just me. You can't beat that low down torque, no need for a ratio change.
