he's my latest edition to the cheapskates construction company!

A rear shelf utilising the seat mounting points. You can buy a wire mesh shelf for about $350 but this has the added benifit of hiding stuff.

Nice work and exactly the sort of thing I was hoping to do. Did you make the top out of normal Ply?
You've got some nasty scratches and dust in there mate! Good to see you have the plastic wrapped scroll ready for any moment

Yes, always got a roll of bog paper handy! lol!

As for the scratches & dust... normally our 'things' are kept in very good order... however, the back of the Prado has escaped attention! Most scratches were from stuff bouncing around on the road up to Mitchell Falls in the Kimberly. Pull the left hand rear seatbelt out and it's coated in red dust too! Must clean it all one day!

As for the floor panels, yes it's normal ply (12mm I think) covered in Bunnings carpet (glued on top and stapled on back). To be able to get the floor in (rear door opening smaller than floor area and cargo barrier allows no wriggle room... not sure if a single piece would be possible without a cargo barrier installed) it need to be in two pieces (see my 1st posting early in this thread).

        Cheers, Nige

              Hi Everyone,

Just thought i'd post my experience here. Pictures to come soon, but....
I am almost finished making a set of draws of similar design to the ones Chippy made earlier on in this thread.

              The basics are:
              15mm Ply - Everything.
3rd row seat catch is what holds them in as well as rear tie down points in the cargo area.
              Bunnings Carpet
Small tie down points on the top - Those good looking stainless steel ones that are sprung loaded and flush fitting. (6 of them)
Rail sliders are home made. Same as what Chippy did - Bearings and 25mm square tube

Ok so you get the idea and when I can get the pictures up you will see it all. I guess the point I was interested in most was the cost !!!!!
Using the stuff above - and starting from scratch - as I had nothing except for the 25mm square tubing - I got most of the things needed from Bunnings - Whats the cost you say.

$920 so far and I still need an extra 3m of carpet. The true cost would be +$50 for some tools I needed to do the job. So easily $1000 + by completion.
I really can't believe how much these things are costing in just raw materials. Oh and I got the bearings - all 36 of them for trade price of about $1 so that was cheap. The rest was bought at "cheapest place wins" prices.

Yes they will look and function great, but.. you start to wonder if it would have been much better to just purchase the pro units. After all, they are all certified to the Oz standards and if you crash you will be wanting those standards in your favor. Also, if one could find some 2nd hand, the price might be about the same as home made units.
Im guessing the pro offerings for Prado draws start at approx $2k for the basics.

Anyway it may be just me but at this stage - the time and cost of decent home made units is not really that attractive ? Especially if you crash and your draws are not up to the safety standards.. which they probably won't be... Its a bit of a worry.

              Tim.

                Hi Tim,
You will find that quite a few PPers are resourcefull and have used materials around the house to meet thier standards. A lot of the drawers have additional cargo barriers installed which should stop the less than perfect models landing on you lap in the event of a mishap.
As the topic suggested the first set of drawers were made under $110, and PP went berko on the upgrade of the basic unit so yeah the price will climb.
The beaty of making home made drawers is that you can design them for your needs not what the general population wants.
My set which ended up under $500 has heavy duty rollers, with one only draw which fits 30 packs smugly. The other side fits my 60L Waeco perfectly and on the floor of the vehicle so I can still see out the back window. Further more with the removal of 4 bolts I can remove the whole unit and put the rear seats in too. I doubt a factory could make what I want with the quality I used for any cheaper.
BTW Bunnings is not the cheapest place to shop.

G'day guys, measuring and checking at the moment and hopefully in about two weeks will have a set of drawers built. I'm using ideas from everyone and building two separate units that can be utilised independently like Chippy and numerous others have done. So far I've stolen all the best ideas (I hope) and some plans (thanks Len).

What I want to do is put in a full size cargo barrier but this might not go in until March next year (2009). Most of the units seem to have been built without a cargo barrier in so I wanted to work out some sizes. Just about all of the boxes have been built with a slope on the back end, usually with some sort of storage setup there. With a full cargo barrier this would become un-usable. As I don't have a cargo barrier I wanted to know how much to "chop" off the end to give clearance. Will be getting a Milford barrier, probably through my wife's uncle.

Len's unit comes right up to the back of the seats:

His plans have this as 1020 deep at the bottom and 912ish at the top. The set back of the slope comming up the back of the seat is 95mm.

Chippy seems to be a little shorter than Len. 8)
His plan measures up at 1000mm deep on the bottom and 875mm along the top.

And the smallest is Mitch with 965mm at the base and 885mm up top. I did read that Mitch was looking at putting in a cargo barrier but don't recall any detail on how much needed to be removed:

A bit hard to see the clearance but it looks reasonably close and not enough room for a barrier.

I'm having a guess that the barrier should be no thicker than 20mm but I'm not sure how for back it comes from the seats so if I follow any of the above which is the best? I was thinking of taking a half way depth between Chippy and Mitch which would be about 980 at the bottom and then settle on 855 at the top. I don't want to loose any space but I don't want to stuff around later on re-cutting after everything has gone in.

Has anyone else built theirs with a full cargo barrier and what depths did you use for top and bottom?

BTW, I really like the slide setup by Pardo:

Nice and neat with access into the top of the drawer. I think the Black Widow untis can have this setup. I also like the protection given by the aluminum strips.

I have a Millford cargo barrier too and my 'floor panels' (mine's a false floor, not drawers... see attached for where my measurements are taken from) are 905mm (including carpet) deep 310mm off the floor, so your plan of 885 deep at the top seems reasonable.

I actually want to tilt my barrier back a little so I can recline the seats one notch more (currently can only go back one notch from 'upright') as my boys sit up fairly straight and when they fall asleep there's not enough angle for them to slump back and sidewards so they end to slump forwards and their heads swing around like those noddy dogs you see on dashboards!

The metal that you have around the edges of your draws, did you have to make them up or where you able to purchase them from some where.

Interested to know as i think they are a great idea..

                        Cheers

This might sound like a of a dumb question but im after a bit of advice on how to carpet the draw system, the best way to measure the cuts up and also how everyone did the tops or corners of the piece of wood. Was it included in the cut and rolled over or was a small strip cut to cover the top? As you can see im having a bit of trouble and any help would be appreciated!

                            Hey Crusin !

I am no expert but I just made up a false floor with the Rear seat holes removed, and made up a simple fridge box for the slide.

When glueing the carpet, I used Sellys Kwik Gel adhesive from Bunnings! ( Just like Kwik Grip, but a bit more useable)

I first cut my templates from Ply 19mm

                            Then Built the box

Next fit the false floor, ( just to be sure I had about 5mm gap for the carpet)

Ok Now I started to Carpet
The false floor not being square was more difficult than the box, but I basically smeared the glue on one side of the ply and placed it glue down on the carpet

Next I glued inside the top edge and side about 50mm from the edge and stapled the carpet down. I could then stretch the carpet out from the opposite side that I had attached and did the same. The other sides i met in the middle however as the bottom was not square the curved section required a separate cut piece. The best way to add this I found was glue and staple down and trim the excess, then push and stretch the carpet as required! ( As it was the underside of the false floor, I was not too concerned).

The box I ensured that the overlap on one of the ends was enough to get back through the centre to almost the other side ( Say minus 50mm)

I then glued a panel, stapled, stretched, and then stapled the other end! Then cut the panel to go through the centre to almost the other side!

Keep going until your finished. It took me around about 6hours, but half that time was working things out, and drinking beer.

                            It looks like this

The finished product was bolted into the Cargo Tiedown bolts!
The Box has then had two turnbuckles used ( behind the Seat), and now has some Angle Alumium along the sides with "R" Clips and Pin Bolts

Yep I know, There is no Drawers, but that will be stage two!!!!
