  • Well I've started getting materials together for my rear drawers which I hope to have finished by the GTG
I'm going for a section on the left for the fridge on slide and two drawers on the right with a shelf across the top just above fridge height and access flaps to the side pockets and storage area at the back of the drawers.
I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) nylon slides for the drawers? I've heard some blokes elsewhere saying they cope better with sand/dirt etc and just require a squirt of silicon spray once in awhile.
Thanks for the info and inspiration so far!
    Cheers, Ben.

    • Torrie, here is a photo of the set I made for Shans 120, similar sort of thing, he has a pretty big fridge which made for smaller drawers. These are on HDPE slides, same as mine.

Hope this gives you some more inspiration.

      cheers JPH

      • Cheers JPH, that's exactly what I'm planning! My fridge is slightly smaller but it's great to see what an idea will look like - if I get it right. May I ask where you got your HDPE?
        Cheers, Ben.

It was 1060 wide, 850 deep and 530 mm high. If you don't go double stack they can be deeper. I have two drawers side by side in my 150 and this works perfectly for me. I got the hdpe from a local plastic supplier and just cut it into strips on the panel saw.

Thanks mate. I'll definitely check it out. I don't see why they wouldn't work just as well as runners if I keep the drawers snug and maybe some on top of the drawer sides to help support the drawer when it's out.
              Cheers, Ben.

              • I've just finished reading this whole thread. Its interesting to see how the methods and ideas evolved over the years.

I like the idea of the table attached to the rear door.

Can anyone shed some light on how its attached at the base and also the anchor points at the top?

                • I posted this in my rig build thread but as you guys gave me the inspiration to give it a try, I thought I'd post my efforts here too:

My homemade drawers and kitchen are finally finished. I'm not going to win any carpentry awards but they are functional and fit my needs perfectly and after the blood sweat and tears that went into them, I'm pretty pleased with the result.

A bit of background, I looked at buying drawers but for the 150 but most commercial ones expect you to take the rear seats out to fit the drawers. I didn't want to do that as I intended to use them for quick weekender trips and didn't want to do the whole seat removal and re-installation every time. I've made these to sit on top of the rear seats when folded down and between the cargo tie downs so I hold them in place with a ratchet strap over the top. I have a 60L arb fridge so I needed a big fridge hole and also wanted my kitchen needs to be built into it. Drifta was closest to what I wanted but I didn't like that their kitchen had to be removed to be used or that it was going to cost extra to get them custom made to sit on top of the seats instead of the usual way. This is what I came up with:

Bottom left is the fridge slide on heavy duty full extension runners from dirt devil industries on ebay. A bit of a bugger to completely remove but definitely solid enough to do the job. Top left is a big drawer for pantry. Heaps for a weekender but even pretty close to holding everything I need for me and dad for the 3 week simpson trip coming up. Top right is recovery gear. Easily fits snatch strap, first aid kit, tyre repair kit and a few tools with a fire extinguisher mounted to the outside. Bottom right is the kitchen box:

Opening out from the side, it's got a green washing up tub that slides on wooden runners up near the top. Under that is a gasmate butane burner with the snowpeak cookware pots and pans bundle on top (3 saucepans, colander, frying pan and kettle all fitting into a neat bundle, definitely worth a look on the drifta website) and still room to chuck a few other odds and ends in. On the right, there's another gasmate butane burner under the deep plates and cups drawer, then the plates and cups drawer and on top, a drawer with a knife and fork tray in the top and underneath that there's the chunkies like egg lifters and potato mashers etc. On the end is an extra plank of wood that serves as the work surface. Two angle brackets on one end dropping into some hammered out straight brackets attached to the box, two holes at the other end for a couple of adjustable tarp poles that have been cut down to fit. Not painted yet though. When not being used, it slides up beside the kitchen box on the right (you can just see it sticking out in the first photo). The two pole legs fit beside the fridge on the fridge slide.

I had to chop a few bits of corner out so it'd make the turn to get in and out of the door and the door wouldn't hit when it closed but it works well for me. I'm in the process of fitting an led to the door trim in the back door to light up the cooking surface.

I've also got a cheap small table that fits up the left hand side of the drawers that we can sit at to eat and the toilet ensuite tent and thunderbox fit up beside on the right. All in all, a lot of work but a rewarding experience when it's all done.

If anyone is thinking of giving it a go, GO for it! A Big thankyou to everyone who posted pictures and advice on this subject, I doubt I would've attempted it without it!
Hi Clackers love your drawers, looking very professional. I had a few questions if thats ok, what load rating are the runners you used? I have been looking at either the the 227kg or the 125kg runners that lock in both their open and closed positions.

In your finished pictures it looks like you have connected a bar between the the two locks on each draw which is also used as your handle, do you have any more pictures on how you did this? And have you found this works well?

                        Keep up the good work.

Best prices I have found so far are from UES http://uesint.com/shop/steel-drawer-slides/

Thanks for the kind words Kev. I paid $110 a pair with free delivery for my slides. They're 850mm long, rated for 125 kg and from the Ebay seller "indrubau." Postage was fast aswell. May want to have a look at his store?

The bar I used to connect the slides together was a piece of aluminium floor trim from bunnings, cost me around $13 from memory. I'm very happy how its turned out so far, it hasn't bent or shown any signs of fatigue yet. I used a large pop rivet to attach it to the slides latch.

                          • Found another and or better solution to making drawers. It's called Easyjoin. I think bunnings sell something similar. Here is a couple of links. Just need to use 25x25x1.6mm in either steel, aluminium or stainless.

Yes it could have been. I went to Bunnings today and they only sell 25x25x1.2mm not the 1.6mm

We have an aluminium supplier here that does sell it so I will have to do up some plans.
