  • Grease for brake caliper pins

I was inspecting the rear brakes trying to find the source of the squeal only when reversing. From the inspection port, I can still see the groove in the brake pads but upon dismantling the calipers, I found that the pads have uneven wear - thin on one end, thick on the other. Similar to this photo

So the caliper pins needs a clean and regrease. Any recommendations on the correct grease to use?

Silicone grease, Bendix do a small satchel for about $5.

The big tube is around $30 from repco. You can use it as antiseize as well, it doesn't melt or run when hot.

Thanks for that. Good to know that is can double as antiseize. Doesn't appear to be many Google hits of stores selling these.

I have the Bendix grease in the satchets too. Good stuff.

Bendix blue satchels $2.50 in a small cardboard box on shelf near the brake pads. My 2008 GXL rear caliper pins are sealed with rubber boots, greased and are clean and pads wear evenly. My 2008 Hilux has exposed pins (front) that get dirty and the inner pad wears unevenly like yours. Can't grease them without collecting dust. Rears are drums!! Hilux is so ancient, Prado is good.

You can take out the slide bolts on the rear calipers to grease them. The rubber boot is just a dust seal.

Yes of course, the prado caliper is designed well. Can't say that about 2008 Hilux though unfortunately.

Needed to replace my rear Prado 150 brake pads after 110k due to uneven wear on both sides. The guide pins were free to move although new grease seem to allow more easy movement. Interesting the worn pads on both sides were the ones without the wear guide, not very helpful. Replaced with Bendix SUV pads which came with their own anti-noise plates so did not need the factory ones.
So it looks like the factory guide pin grease did not go the distance and maybe needs to be replaced before the pads wear out? Easy enough to do, 5-minute job, cheaper than the $100 pads.

All utes have rear drum brakes except amarok and 79 series LC. I wouldn't buy another one until they get disks all round. Also the Hilux handbrake doesn't work.

All I ever used on the slide pins at each brake pad change was Penrite EP3% grease from the 500g tub. I applied it with a nice thick coating each time. Never had an issue with it or the rubber boots when using it for a very time long time across 2 Prados.

Drum brakes are such a cop out. Very 1980’s. So many cars have them on the rear.
