Yes unsprung weight affects your car in a big way. Imagine driving over bumps or corrugations, you have all that extra weight slapping up towards the chassis. You def would need to put in heaver springs and shocks otherwise it would not be comfortable

    • Crownwheel didn't get off easy either!

Seven teeth off the ring, and about 70% of the pinion destroyed.... i'm going for a warranty claim with Nitro, see how I go. The new pinion supplied is much larger than the old one, and didn't require half the amount of shims or any shaving to fit. It also uses the OEM pinion flange with larger spline count. It should be a lot stronger....

      • Hi Roo,
I believe he was running Nitro gears.

It took me about an hour to winch out and remove the tail shaft... managed to drive in 2wd for the rest of the w/end and got home ok, no noises after about 250km of driving. Currently ordering a new gear set from the states, costs about $300 inc shipping + getting it fitted locally. Will post some pics of the damage when I get it all done.

This concerns me a little bit as I was planning on replacing the Cardboard OEM Ring and Pinion gears in the front diff of the 80 with Nitro gears.

        • Hi Guys
Just joined . Sherdded a diff on the river side of The Blue Rag Track 1KM from the bottom 2 weeks ago. Took four days to get it out, ended up replacing it on the track and driving it out . Had to winch the recovery vehicle out three times on the way out due to rain......Great Day Out!!!!

          • 80 series front diff is the same 8" as the prado rear and hilux, with 33's and solid pinon spacer you shoudnt break it, but many do mainly due to running 35's. I wish toyota just put a decent 9"+ diff to start with and it solve a lot of issues!

Yes Nitro, but the new pinion they sent me is a lot bigger than the old one + it didn't require nearly as many shims or any shaving to fit. It seems there may have been a design flaw or they sent me the wrong part originally... I also used to get a whine out of the rear, this has now been solved with the new ring and pinion.

              • another one bites the dust... thanks to the burrup peninsula all in good fun, haven't pulled the centre out yet but im guessing crown wheel and pinion... ive found superior do the nitro heavy duty ones for $600 and why not front and rear air lockers too, pretty certain just a front locker would have got me up this hill... gotta say im glad it was an old 60 series with pto winch that came to the rescue, taking about an hour and a half...

                  • Add one more to the club. Rear diff in my 95 series.
Did it on Mt Terrible near Eildon on the weekend.

Is the 90/95 series as prone to breakage as the 120? Do they have the same diff as the 120 or are there any differences? I have been told I have a 2 pinion LSD and I can upgrade to a 4 pinion which will be stronger and still fit, but this will only mean a stronger LSD wont it? Not stronger crown wheel and pinion? Is the 4 pinion from a 120 series?

My Axel code is A020A which is apparently a 4.3:1 ratio LSD
The 4 pinion is an A020B I am told, with the same ratio.

For the guys looking at diff conversions Matt from Total Traction Drivelines in Moorabbin suggested a swap to a heavier unit that he does as a conversion. I don't remember what diff he uses but says they fit the Prado and even easier for leaf spring Hilux. Didn't ask price as its a bit excessive for my requirements.

                    • Hi apples, I doubt you have a 2 pinion LSD. 2 pinion diff centres are normally only found in open diffs (like the front diff on your 120)

The easiest upgrade for you, once you have a new crown wheel and pinion or a new diff, is to install a switchable locker like an air locker or e-locker. Preventing wheel spin will limit shock loading to the CW&P so reduce the chance of it failing again.

Thanks Williade, I suspected I was being spun a yarn. The exploded diagram in my service manual doesn't mention alternate diffs and it shows 4 pinions in the illustration.
I'll hold out on the locker for now as I'll hopefully be upgrading to a Hilux for work in the next 12 months, until then I'll just have to keep all wheels on the ground.

It's not the same as 80 series front diff, 80's are reverse cut high pinion gears and strengths are different.

How is your diff going now with new Nitro gears?

I'm just buying a used 2006 120 series and the diff concerns me a bit, though I have a hilux running hilux diffs with nitro gears and solid spacers and even in competition 4wd'n it handles 37" sticky compound tyres, so if built right it should be fine in a prado I would have thought.

                          Cheers brad

                            • I just became the latest addition to the Prado Diff Club. Went for a play out at the Glasshouse tracks on Sunday and ripped a few teeth of the rear crownwheel.

                              • Hi Guys... I have just joined this not so exclusive club. Ours happened up near Walhalla at 4pm on the side of a not so steep hill. Was meant to be the last climb for the day.

Just heard a couple of knocking noises, so stopped. Then couldn't go forward at all. Was able to reverse to a flat section on the side of the track.
There we pulled out the prop shaft. That didn't fix it, so next step was to pull out the diff centre.

Definitely went up some harder climbs earlier in the day.

After reading this thread, it sounds like I should be calling these guys tomorrow morning:
                                Superior Engineering

The interesting part is that I had a rear diff lock installed, but it was playing up earlier in the day (ie. not coming on straight away). I thought it was on when this happened, but when I checked afterwards there seems to be no power to the air compressor or locker. I found a 40amp fuse under the bonnet, but it was intact. So no idea what is going on.

                                Here is a pic:
