Dropped my diff off to Bathurst Toyota yesterday for inspection, as a Toyota rep was going there today.

Then got the phone call this afternoon - Toyota will not cover it under warranty as it has been modified by fitting the diff lock. Predictable standard response! I have asked for this in writing.

Next step - I will get a professional metallurgist report on the failure, as I am sure it is due to the large grain struture in the crown wheel casting as a result of poor heat treatment.

    To be continued ...

That sux mate... to refuse warranty, don't they have to be able to prove that the modified part actually caused the fault? Or can they just pick and choose and somehow link that modification A caused fault B, bad luck.

Are there any stronger parts that can be fitted to the diff? Someone was telling me the other day the the Prado diffs are the same as the hilux, I would've thought they'd be a little under cooked for the prado if this were true.

Anyhow good luck with the outcome.

Yep, that's right, same 8 inch diff centre. Available with and without LSD. Used in Hiluxs, 90 and 120 series Prado and Surfs.

I have personally installed a Hilux 2wd open diff into a Surf (LSD) to get it home and a Surf diff into a 90 series.

Heard of plenty of Hilux diffs going bang too over the years.... some go bang with only the 2.8 diesel in the front while others hold together with V8 conversions done... go figure.

          Unfortunately "NO"

120GXV6 don't give up your quest, you never know what may prevail. However I suspect there could be a load issue :?:

I also agree "Good luck with the outcome"

I'll be watching this with great interest. I've been thinking about the locker, but then I would hate to void the warranty also.

Over in this other thread, http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?p=9386&#9386, mark_au had his diff replaced under warranty. It seems if it is not modified, then Toyota may replace it without argument.

Now, with a quality locker installed, it seems a little unfair Toyota would not honour the warranty, especially given this seems to be a known issue.

Still, I understand they may have a way out if they choose to go that route.

Best of luck 120GXV6! I hope for your sake, as well as Toyotas, that they see reason and play fair by covering it under warranty.

Back on the road again, a bit poorer!
Here's a shot of the blown diff, crown and pinion; kaput.

I am confident Toyota read these posts, so that they may improve product reliability and better serve their customers.

ouch ouch ouch+ $980 per side installed.

A local fella did it for me, $1500 for a new center, plus $270 labour.
Apparently a rebuilt centre would cost about 1500 too...

The diff isn't actually that weak.

As posted before, there is less than 0.01% of the prado's on the road that have had driveline issues.

Not sure how many luxes have done diffs? I dont know of any.

I think the "not covered" reply is used quite often. Most cases I would assume people mumble and walk away.

If you back up your claim as you said with a metalury report and maybe with something from ARB I think they would have to look at it more closely.

I think ARB state that a locker is easier on a diff. A fast spinning wheel that comes back to earth is worse than a slow moving "locked " one.
And as far as cross wheel loading, its taken by the splines and diff centre(locker), Not the crown and pinion...

Your just a red necked lead footed forest feker as far as they know....

                        Jeff.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

                                It's all a game.

It's like the law, the police and the justice system. It's not about wright and wrong, or about justice - it's about who can win the game. Who has the sharpest legal team.

With this diff saga it'll be a case of who (Toyota or the customer) can make things more uncomfortable for the other party.

It starts with Toyota trying to make it all go away at no cost to themselves. Make it the customer's problem.

If the customer bounces back with something unusual, like a metallurgical analysis, Toyota is going to be quite startled and might start to think that they've got a live one here and decide it's cheaper for them to pay up.

If Toyota still doesn't give in then the customer communicates with a consumer protection organisation or the motoring media with his rather interesting information.

                                And so it goes on.

Even if the customer ends up not 'winning', s/he can take satisfaction in the knowledge that they've probably ended up costing Toyota a heck of a lot more than if they'd just replaced the diff under warranty in the first place.

Even just the discussion right here in this forum is damaging to Toyota in some way by virtue of it introducing a doubt in the minds of future Toyota purchasers.

People do NOT want to hear anything about Toyotas other than that they're bullet-proof.

I say go make a noise. It's the squeaky wheel that gets oil, so go squeak. A lot!

                                Tim
