diesel rattle in D4D Prado

You know, in this day and age of fancy computers and electronic micro switching controls and sensors why wouldn't any manufacturer (read this Mr Toyota) put a program into the car's ECM to show a warning when the injector readings go out of spec? I mean how hard could it be? The question should probably be why haven't they done it and what have they got to gain by not doing it?

Absolutely - I mean, I just have a check engine light for a "simple" EGR switch that has gone out of spec (P0400 ? - Over voltage), even though I work in IT, a new "firmware" update could easily address this.

I totally agree - but it would be nice if there was at least a "check engine" light if an injector goes out of range - or at least some indication that there is something amiss with the injectors via the ECM.

Other brands have a limp home mode when things don't work properly to help minimize engine damage. So, Roo, refresh my memory, are Toyota supposed to check the injector seals every 40,000km? Is this in the service schedule? It certainly isn't in the owners service guide.

Injector 3 is, and injector 1 is on its way... Injector 1 a few days ago was at around 3.5 so Im going to replace them all. I'll look at doing the valve clearance check while I'm in there - the non-audible way or should I say the only real way.....

Dave the Toyota procedure for checking valve clearances involves pulling the injectors, thus the seats are changed.

yeh that's what they are "supposed" to do but most don't. They usually just do a listening test to here if there are any tapping sounds. Might have changed now with all the mess around. Can hope so anyway.

Toyota announced a recall today for several models. One involved the hybrid Lexus where a fault causes the engine to stop completely. They reckon it affected a couple of thousand cars. So, if they can recall the Lexus for this, then why not recall the D4Ds to check for injector and seal issues that similarly could cause the engine to stop? I suspect because the Lexus is more expensive and driven by more important people, Toyota wants to look after them.

Probably because there are many many more vehicles with D4D's that would need to be recalled than there would be for the Lexus.....$$$ comes before customers

Not to split hairs - but have a quick Google on D4D failures around the world, we (Australia) seem to have the higher percentage. Euro and SA Toyota dealers were doing the proper 80k KM service, not just listening....

We r still deciding whether to go a Prado or not and if so which one. It really doesn't seem worth the risk with these kdj cars. If you buy one with all 4 injectors done how long should you get out of them? And is there anything at all that you can do to stop the problem? I know some are using extra fuel filters, some are checking oil screen ect ect. Scares the crap out of me, but the advantages with power and economy are nice. At what point does it just not become a good choice to go with these prados?

Is it a smarter choice to get an old kzj and chip and exhaust it go get power economy and a more reliable engine? Cheers for looking and responding positively

IMO..yes. Only met a few other PP members and those that had the 1KZ all had added an a/m exhaust and were extremely happy. A no then chip and it get's you to almost a KDJ..but I would not say you are making it more reliable, after all your taking it away from standard. Some models turn off and on at your discretion but naturally these are the more expensive one's. In my world (it is bizarre) diesels were meant to be 'chuggy' but reliable, it was petrol vehicles that were meant to be the 'faffy'' tip toe lightly one's. All this adding extra filters and checking sump screens makes..i just don't agree!!??

No dramas Roo..I've already installed a Beaudesert exhaust, best money I ever spent. I may never get a chip but the one above is the only one I'd ever get for the feature I mentioned. A chip sounds not great in a D4D..pleased I fell into the 1KZ brigade...Cheers C.

Look out we had same rattle and smoke at start-up. complained to toyota who serviced, then the engine has just blown up. Cracked piston $12,800.00 fix. Toyota liars blame fuel. D4D 160,000.Kms
