Even if you buy the oil yourself and do the job yourself that's $100 per oil change = $1,500.

On top of that fuel economy is around 2L/100km worse off so $3 ($1.50 per litre) per 100km over 150,000 = $4,500 in fuel savings
I think your being a little optimistic if you think your injectors will still be 2L/100km better of after they have done 150,000. based on my experience after that amount of kms it was only 0.5l to1L better off, and a much rougher idle.

I would want to buy any diesel second hand that only had its oil changed every 10,000.

    • Mine's nearing 100k kms and with the bigger tyres, roof racks etc I'm still getting low 10L /100kms city driving and no rough idle issues. There aren't too many 1Kz that come close to this.

Injectors are only part of the fuel efficiency equation....blocked EGR/elbow, wrong tyre pressure etc.

Each to their own mate, there is no need to justify your choice with 1Kz, both engines (even going Petrol) could be the right answer. It all depends on your needs and wants.

I've bought the 1KD brand new, always took care of it (now even check the injector feedbacks myself for free) so fingers crossed I'll keep it out of trouble.
Every engine/car has its soft spots and as long as you know what they are (1KZ - glow plugs which cause the engine to go bang) the more $$$ you can keep in your pocket.

Lol - I think you just did. The internet is a great place for trolling.

I use my 1KZ as my daily driver to work, city driving it averages 10L/100km so you can understand why i was less than impressed with the 1KD. normal fill is 62L for 620km. But that's probably because i look after it and keep its oil nice and fresh so its never suffered from the ERG build up. When i installed the catch can over the weekend their was no need to clean it as it was nearly clean as a whistle down past the EGR valve.

Just some food for thought, check this out:

Whats interesting is Hyundai and produce a more powerful Diesel in a 2.2L configuration, and the Range Rover Sports 3L V6 is just impressive. Toyota have some catching up to do with their direct injection technology. Dont get me wrong i love my Toyota but I would be looking at other options if i were to replace it.

        • I do agree with Range Rover / Disco 4...basically any European diesel is far more superior than what the Japanese are producing at the moment.

Disco 4 is definitely worth considering for some....not me though. I've had some 2nd hand experience with Disco 3/4 (2 of my mates own them) and the amount of electrical/ECU issues they had pushed me away from this car.

Also when travelling to some of our more remote locations and in need of car parts are we more likely to find a Toyota/Nissan or a Range Rover/Hyundai?

I had a mate who travelled through the Nullarbor in his BMW X5 on regular basis. Good luck trying to find285/45R19 tyre in the bush (remember these things come with tyre saver things so no spares) and if I remember correctly front tyres are different in size to the rears. Excellent cars though.

As I said before horses for courses and If you're 1Kz gives you 10L/100km - i'd be happy with that.

PS. Just saw your location - hence some of my arguments above might not be valid to you.

          • Indeed, if Toyota was to replace the Dreadful 4 Diesel with something comparable to the TDV6, nobody would mourn the D4D. I would seriously consider a diesel if there was a similar option available.

            • Be careful Rob.

I have a 2007 GXL Prado D4D and in the last six months the car started to blow smoke at start up and a loud rattle started until the engine was warm. Despite a number of mechanics investigating the problem with no success, the engine of my car car seized and I now have to replace it entirely, at a cost of close to $13,000.

The dealership claim the problem is caused by "fuel issues" but I don't buy it - a quick google will tell you the cars have a fuel injector problem - http://www.carsguide.com.au/news-and...rado_2003_2009

Be firm with your service mechanic and make sure the problem is fixed before you end up in the situation I'm in.

You should also consider telling the Dept of Infrastructure and Transport about the problem, as they've advised me that if they receive enough complaints they will investigate and possibly order a recall of the vehicles in Australia - fill in the form online here: http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/veh...aint_form.aspx

              Hope this helps.

              • I know there is lots of talk about this but wanted to put forward my current situation.
I have a 06 which was running sweet 15,000 kms ago, but after the near 10,000km gulf n cape trip the prado now blows ALOT of white smoke on startup.
Also when this happens the egt's bring a error on the gauge of 1000degrees just till it clears out (pre turbo)

Now I thought the egt gauge was playing up but it only reads the error of super high egt's when it blows the smoke.

It has now got 148,300kms and is due for the last service in the warranty period due at 148,000, i have dropped it off overnight to have it done and a cold injector value check.

Being its just within warranty are Toyota likely to tell me nothing is wrong and try to get out of it? What else do i do as injectors are part of the warranty I'd like to get out of them while I can.

Also would it be safe to drive another 15,000 kms as i need to do approx 10,000 in next 3 weeks or could this see the demise of the motor?

Any advice is appreciated as im not confident Toyota will tell me the correct thing after what's read on prado point.
                Cheers brad

                • Brad, I wouldn't use it mate, sounds like they are just about gone. Chances are toyota will try to get out of it and tell you they are fine. Perhaps there is a NSW member who can connect to your ECU and read out the injector feedback values? Alternatively take it to an independent diesel specialist and get them to read out the injector feedback values and write you a report. The test needs to be done from cold start.

                  • Yeh I was thinking that, I guess I'll see what they say tomorrow and ill have to try and find someone willing to do a report for me..

My major problem is next week i need to drive to sa and back then in 2.5 weeks i need to be in wa to start a new job.

If any one has some advice for me ill appreciate it if you could help me out.
                    Thanks

                    • On a simmiliar note pjorek, completely standard i had never got better then 12.5L/100 and on my trip to the cape fully loaded my economy ranged between 14.7L/100 - 22.5L/100 so even standard my truck has never really been great on fuel (bought it at 120,000)

Guess injectors were prob always on the way out

Almost certain you've got a blow injector seal. I had the exact same cloud of white some on cold start with my D4D.

The white smoke is caused by engine oil leaking past the compromised seals into the combustion chamber then getting burnt off on start-up. Will only happen after left standing for a while.

Should be fixed under warranty but get a interdependent report first so they can't wriggle out of it.

                        • Just got the call from Toyota, and my injectors need to be changed and they will only cover $1000 under warranty (apparently its under the warranty they gave me when I bought car 6months ago) and i will need to pay $3500..

Went in and was told that was for non genuine injectors and for genuine injectors to be replaced it was gonna cost me $4650.

Is it worth saving $1150 and going non genuine?

So they're saying it will cost you $4,500 to do the job then. Holly crap, get your own injectors and then get them to put them in. That $1,000 they are offering to cover is just the labour costs the $3.5k is for the injectors. Get some bailey's ones or new ones from nick in NZ, will save you a couple of thousand.

                            • Second to what Gypsy said. Rick_NZ has them supplied for $1800. Any reputable diesel mechanic can do the job for $1000 - $1500 so that's cheaper than those toyota monkeys. Rick_NZ injectors should get to you way before you have to leave.

If you don't end up changing them and you get to WA I can read your injector feedback values

                              • I went to a local diesel mechanic was quoted around $3000 mark but they cannot do it in next 3 weeks and they told me no one other then Toyota can code the injectors to the computer and this should be done (was told not 100% necessary)

Might ring west end diesel in syd and see what they quote but I don't see what other options i have.
