120 Towbar recall

Would that be the one between your location of 'south of Tom Ugly's' but north of Sutherland?

(Regular servicing is usually done somewhere else. It was just convienient to have it all done along with the recall at the same time. I actually don't mind someone having to ask how to do it. We all have to learn at somepoint, but it wasn't done correctly and I can't trust the result. And I don't mind mistakes, we all make them from time to time, but being told about it so it could be corrected would have been good.)

To those being told by their dealers that the genuine toyota cast hitch is ok for use with HR WDH - I would suggest you ask the service manager to:
1. read the booklet that comes with the recall, and then
2. read the sticker that's put into the owners manual, and then
3. read the sticker on the actual hitch receiver
They should hang their head in shame as all three spots above say the toyota receiver should not be used with non genuine WDH...

30-06-2003 approx 6 pm there was no option to read the booklet, manual or anything else !
Told by salesman to get the Toyota tow bar for warranty purposes and use the Hayman Reece wdh in that !

Toyota should be paying for the Hayman Reece tow bar to replace their piece of crap..

Just remembered, the sales pricks get a bigger commission with all the accessories they sell with the vehicle as well.
As I suggested earlier, it pays to record conversations when spending your hard earned money. Live and learn....

Recently booked in the 120 for the recall. Toyota dealer inspected finding the towbar was ok but the bolts where loose. Advised me that they replaced the bolts (did see the old ones) and tension to spec.

Placed a decal on the bar and on page 256 of the vehicles manual. Also left a Toyota Basic Towing Guide on the seat.

I don't tow anything heavy but if I do let’s hope this will hold together.

I will be checking those bolts every service for my own piece of mind.

I have a Hayman Reese hitch which bolts to both sides of chassis as well as the original Toyota mounting positions. I went to Toyota today they issued me a booklet on towing info and placed an updated sticker in the Handbook.
they also issued me a receipt of the warranty work and on that was printed Toyota does not advise the use of aftermarket towbars and hitches. WTF where does that leave me for insurance purposes does that mean my vehicle is now not covered as Toyota have deemed these After market Towbars not suitable. I tried calling Hayman Reese today but they are closed for the holidays. Does anyone else have this written on their dockets??

Toyota wouldn't advise the use of any aftermarket product, but that won't affect your insurance at all.

Got the follow up letter today to bring it in as my parts have arrived ie. a bloody sticker! I again asked about the WDH and its replacement with a free genuine Toyota one. Mumble mumble.....I will put you onto the service bloke. He duly comes on the line and says he knows nothing about Toyota swapping WDH as they haven't been informed of this. He apparently hasn't read the recall letter and suggested that I ring Toyota [02 97103333] . Such good service. Of course it still begs the question asked in an earlier post as to whether this towbar is fit for purpose as defined by the Trade Practices Act. Toyota, of course did not answer their phone. He then said that I should not use a non standard WDH [ last week they said it would be fine] but that I should have been using the genuine Toyota one which I duly informed him did not exist until recently and this bar has been around for 10 years. I think that I agree with all of the posters who said we should be given a new free HR towbar like the ones on the 150 as Toyota clearly think that their towbar is not up to the task of doing what a normal consumer expects his towbar to do. If Toyota think it is not up to scratch then they should refund or replace. Simple. Not holding my breath.

Not sure why the dealer wants you to ring Toyota, The recall letter clearly states Toyota will swap the WDH. Take the recall letter with you. They can read you would think.

Why would you want their bit of crap ???
Would be great if some legal brain took them on and made them supply and fit the Hayman Reece which is up to the task for which it is designed, instead of replacing something decent with a sub standard unit.

Well towed the van the first time from ACT to Mildura, not overly impressed as the car did not feel right, van sits with a slight up nose attitude but not much. Can't put my finger on it but "it is the vibe"
