Great install there Peter, That image quality is tops. I might have to get me one of these cameras and a decent screen. My eBay special is looking a bit tired after 18 months use.

    Keep up the great work,

    Drew.

      Hi all,

I bought my camera from Audicom in Kalgoorlie...... $300 for a flush mount jobby. I made a bracket to house the trailer plug and the camera side by side. Just have to be careful if going through creek beds and such due to it's positioning (could get snagged?). It's also water proof and comes with full warranty.

I have a GXL Prado and installed a Pioneer double Din DVD player with the auxillary inputs for just about everything. I wired it up to a reverse signal wire near the shifter (auto) and whalla, it gives a superb picture....

Will get some pics up next break when I'm home....

What is the going rate for an upgrade head unit for a 07 GXL. I have the standard radio/mp3 player installed ....

Just trying to weigh up the pro/cons on installing a rear camera - due to fear of turing a child into a speed bump....

The vis is generally ok, however if something was close in to the car, then the vis (as we all know) is nuffin.... flying blind or relying on reverse sensors.

Anyone done/installed the upgrade head unit from the standard?

It has been discussed in a few other threads before, Search button will bring it up. From memory it was in the 2-3500 Mark.

anyone else got a reverse camera?

i've got a flush mount one as part of the kit i just bought but i'm not a fan of the idea of drilling the bumper (although the kit includes the right sized hole saw)

anyone got any ideas or suggestions?

where's the new grande put it given it comes standard?

I'ld go in the black plastic doo-dad on the back door, under the number plate light bulge but above the number plate.

It's easier to replace if you ever have to remove the camera and the wiring can run through all of the existing wiring loom through the door skin and into the cab.

              Cheers

i'm thinking the same.... but i can't recall how long it is and if the black plastic part is deep enough.

have to check that out first thing in the morn!

Our camera is located, as Chippy indicated, on top of the number plate. It is protected there and one has to bend to even see it.

It is positioned to show the tow bar on the edge of the screen, so you can hitch up on your own.

                  happy with it there

                    McBain,

Which camera have you got and what is the flush mount like. I've been thinking about popping one of the reversing sensors out and replacing with a camera - could that work??

I hate the reversing sensors anyway, and I tend to ignore their constant beeping - and that leads to bad things................... ops:

yeah, that's what this one is designed for, counter sink in the rear bumper... just not a fan of the idea because i'm a like of keeping the back symetrical and if i put it in the dead centre of the rear bumper all i'll really see is the tow bar!

the two spots i'm considering are these ones..

I also toyed with the idea of putting it inside the back window up the top looking through the window but given the camera has 10 LED's on it i think the light they put out would give reflection issues...

Right, I get the symmetry thing. I already have 4 sensor gizmos in the bumper and wondered if it would look too in-ya-face to replace one with a camera.

Can you give me some details about the camera - make, where it's from, size - whatever. Oh, and what about the viewing screen

I would suggest the more central the better. Especially on the number plate surround I would squeeze it over towards center of the vehicle. Gives you a better idea when lining up your towbar to trailer hitch.
I got all mine hooked up and checked where was best suited before fully installing it. Good luck with it.

                            Here's mine

I would actually like to change the angle (which I can do but have not yet got around to it) so that it aims down at the towbar so I have an accurate perspective of how close I am to anything.

                            Good Luck

                            Cheers - Greg (Byrnsie)

Yeah ebay jobby. Picture is good as long as the camera is clean. Location makes it a bit prone to dirt in dusty conditions or water droplets when it is raining. These both obviously have an effect on the picture, otherwise all good. I think the size, quality and position of your monitor has more of an impact on picture quality.

I also tried to wire an additional switch that allows me to turn on the camera when not in reverse. It works but the reverse lights come on at the same time so it really freaks out the vehicle behind you when your reverse lights come on while moving forward. ops: I have obviously done something wrong with my switch wiring but not sure what. Another job for the next rainy day!
