Re: What Brand Tyres and Size do you use?

I had my bridgies rotated balanced etc today and was asking about tyres and suggested LT, the boys tried to tell me that i would have problems balancing a LT tyre on a prado, they reckon they are too heavy and don't balance up good, i told them a lot of guys are running LT on the forum. Any comments on the LT balancing up. They did cooment that they have had some good reviews about the GO12 yoko AT.

Re: What Brand Tyres and Size do you use?

i have the mighty stt's which have now done over 35000km's..AND THERE IS STILL HEAPS OF TREAD ON THEM...!!!

I keep mine on full time and rotatae without fail every 5000km's..

i dont bother with a second set as i work away 2 weeks on and 2 off , so when i am home mine are off the road half the time ,
any way i think they handle the black stuff well especially after just finishing a 7000km round trip from Cairns to Newcastle....
when they wear i will just get another set

Re: What Brand Tyres and Size do you use?

So as far as AT tyres go, my short list is this Grandtrek AT3's, BFG AT's, Yoko G012's and Wr/Silent Armor. :? :?
Can I get a show of hands and any considered opinion to assist with my upcoming purchase?
Currently running Cooper AT''s 265/65R17 that have done 70+ thow and have had no probs off road. However I find them a little slippery in the wet on the black stuff and tend to track quite a lot.
As 80% of my driving is done on road, probably more if I'm honest, I'm keen to try something with silicon in it and in a 70 series.

Any thoughts on the above tyres much appreciated.

Re: What Brand Tyres and Size do you use?

noticed a lot are running 265/70/R17 instead of the standard 265/65/R17

anyone know where i can find what the rules are in QLD on changing tyre size? I 've seen different stories bantered around in a number of threads but 't don't recall seeing a link or direct quote from Qld Trans or similar

found this link that helps work out the specifics. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

circumference difference of 3.3 inches is about 3.43% bigger, which is less than 5% (if thats the magic number) or is it the 65 to 70 thats the prob? i.e 5/60 is 8.3% which is more than 5%?

                    im confused!

                      aahh, I think I've sussed it . QLD allows 15mm diameter change.. 265/65= 776.3mm 265/70= 802.8mm = 26.5 mm bigger...

                      bugger.

Re: What Brand Tyres and Size do you use?

Straight out of Qld Mod booklet

                        Width

an off-road passenger vehicle fitted with
front and rear beam axles, the maximum tyre width
must not be more than 1.5 times the vehicle
                        manufacturer’s widest optional tyre.
The nominal width of the narrowest tyre fitted to a
vehicle must not be less than 70 per cent of the nominal
width of the largest tyre fitted and never less than the
vehicle manufacturer’s narrowest optional tyre as
indicated on the manufacturer’s tyre placard.

                        Track

Track is measured at ground level from the centre of the
tyre on one side to the centre of the corresponding tyre
on the opposite side of the vehicle. Front and rear track
                        differs on many vehicles.

The wheel track must not be reduced to less than the
standard track specified by the vehicle manufacturer
for the particular model of vehicle.

Off-road passenger vehicles fitted with front
and rear beam axles, may have an increase in track
up to 50mm beyond the maximum specified by
the vehicle manufacturer for the particular model
                        of vehicle.

                        Diameters

The rim diameter may be varied from the standard size
but the overall diameter of the tyre must not vary by
                        more than +15mm or -26mm.

                              In short - No.

My 70's are only put on for a play time trip and aren't my everyday tyres which are 65's, however this thread has made me have a good think, particularly about insurance complications.

Come monday, i'm going to ring up an AIS (Approved Inspection Station) and see about getting an inspection and mod plate fitted.
