  • 150 Auto gearbox thud on kick back

Hi everyone. My first post. Had my 150 D4d for about 9 months and has 39K on it when I brought it. Had a hesitation issue on acceleration and had a software upgrade to fix that. Also has a bad thump when going around a larger round about at 20 - 30km when the auto drops back gears. The harder I accelerate the worse it is. Had the 80K service today at 57K as was serviced in the past base on age. Toyota tell me the thud on kick back is normal for a diesel. To me it can't be normal. Even when I told them I would send Toyota an email they still said it was normal. Anyone heard of this before?

By this do you mean a noise or an actual bump you can feel? I think there is a known 'feature' on some builds that the tail shaft is the culprit. I've experienced on many makes of cars so it's not unusual.

No its an actual thud. Not the tail shaft Issue. When going around a round about it drops back with a thud.

Mine has a noticeable "thud" when it drops into gear (eg: standing at traffic lights) but I've also found this to be common in other vehicles as well. Is this what you mean and have you noticed it in other circumstances?

Mat, I've had a curious thud when going very slow uphill when decelerating e.g. when approaching traffic lights. I think it is a quirk of the trani nothing more as it only does it when you are travelling really slow up a fairly steep hill when the trani is shifting from second back to first gear.

That's not right, should be sitting in 1st waiting to go, do mean the thud from 2nd to 1st just before stop. Or are you shifting to N at the lights?

The thud is not when taking off or slowing down. Its when I go into a large round about with a faster turn. Between 20 - 30km/hr when I go to accelerate to continue around the round about to exit at 90deg from the start when the auot kicks back it thuds. The harder I accelerate the heavier the thud. Toyota say its normal but none of you seem to know what I am talking about. They say on the service report they got it to fault and when driving another D4D they could get it to do the same. Is going to damage the driveline so cannot be normal.

No manual shifting. Probably is the shift from 2 -> 1.
Are we sure it's transmission? A flogged suspension bush can lead to some horrible sounds under the right conditions.

hmm mine does the same sort of thing occasionally...38k on the clock. On one particular bit of road you have to do a gentle 90 degree turn right - up a hill - then a sharp 90 degree turn left. As you slow from about 50kph to 20kph or so on the hill to take the left you get a clunk as it drops a cog...doesn't really bother me that much but if its an issue better get it fixed.

Not the suspension. Had Koni's and King springs fitted recently. Has only done 57K. Is the transmission for sure.

The thud is far too violent if I accelerate harder. Will not do the car any good in the long run

Mines the same experience as Mattd4d and Nightrod111. I have 60k on the clock now.

Mine will do it almost every time I'm going around a large round about and accelerate when doing between 20 - 30 km. Toyota say they were able to replicate the fault and they could also get another Prado they had in the yard to do it to.

I had a similar thing and i think its down to the tailshaft binding rather than the gearbox itself. The splines get dry and don't move smoothly resulting in bumps and bangs when under various loads. Just had my tailshaft 're greased' at the 40k service and its fixed the problem however this is an ongoing issue for the autos - see other threads about tailshaft clunks. The dealer said that if it happens again they will swap out the old shaft for a new teflon coated one that should solve the problem...
