At the last service for my 150 they pulled the tailshaft out and regreased it ,they say that's the proper way to fix it . The clunk has totally gone .
        Cheers

          I wonder for how long.

Like the other vehicles, the fix is now to replace the tail shaft apparently.

My dealership has a mountain of new tail shafts sitting there for replacement.

Mine lasted about 10,000km and is just starting to do it again, only a little bit occasionaly, but I think it's time to have it changed.

You can add another March 2011 GXL to the list, my dealer has just ordered my new tail shaft. I took it back with a whole list most of which they have fixed.
List included Mud Flaps and re spray, all new door seals, transmission up grade, new tail shaft, dinggers off, and new T3 Tjm bull bar trims... Won't need to buy a 2012 at this rate!!!

Worth noting my dealer has blamed the innitial tune of the poor auto box as the cause of the tail shaft and diff failures that Toyota have experienced quoting the gear box will grab first gear on most round abouts.

What do they mean when they say "the gear box will grab first gear on most round abouts" and what is meant by tailshaft failure, as the binding is not a failure, it's a design fault carried over from the 120 series that also affects the current 200 series and Hilux models

Had my Prado in for a 'fix' as its been not even 500km since service and its happened again. Service Tech drove, and said they had to remove tailshaft, cleaned slip joints and re-greased. Feels much better now, pity they didn't have the updated shafts... lets see how long it lasts.

My new shaft has been on order for a month. Fortunatly the thump has been less obvious in the coller weather. I must say that I am a tad nervious about the balance being correct when they fit the new one.

Well, this is Frucked! Next service I'll be requested a new tailshaft, its happened again less than 1,00kms.
This time when I back off and accelerate there is a slight pull and I feel it through the pedals.
My work Hilux (4X4 Auto D4D) has clocked up 75,00km in 12 months and no dramas, and the previous one (a hand me down) had almost 300,000kms.... will this last the distance????

I've had new shaft for 9 days now; just under 5000km on it so far and no clunks or problems.

If the dealer does it properly u don't normally have an issue again, u can over grease it as well which doesn't help.

This thread tells me this is predominately only an issue in automatics ? Not manuals ?
