Has anyone noticed or checked for dust leakage past the air filter seal in the 2.8l engines in the 150 series Prado. I originally thought it was carelessness on the part of the service mechanic at my local Toyota dealer. I have since found out there may be a problem with the filter housings. I have taken photos of a small amount of dust collected on the stainless steel grid on the engine side of the air filter.

I have never seen the air filter on a 2.8 but on my 3.0L dust can get between the filter and the housing.
The solution is each time the filter is replaced I get some grease and smear around the edge of the filter.
It works well, even after a long and dusty trip very little dust has got past it into the air box.

Yep, I've reported mine 5 times now to 3 different dealers. 3 times they couldn't find what the issue was, once they cleaned it and said monitor it and the last time they couldn't see the issue until I pointed it out then insinuated that the Safari snorkel was to blame. Are there actually any good Toyota Dealers in the country?

Literally just got a phone call from the local Toyota Dealer regarding this. Basically said that Toyota says that if the vehicle is used under dusty conditions, this is perfectly normal and won't cause any long term issues with anything, and all he can suggest is regularly cleaning or replacing the air filter if used in dusty conditions. That's fair, but if it has drawn that much dust thru the air filter after only 1500kms of dirt, I'd suggest there is a major issue somewhere and I'd hate to imagine how one that lives on dirt roads is faring.

I was surprised about the amount of very fine dust above the air filter. There is a flaw in my air box (2019), but I suspect very hard to feel if you have calluses . If you run your finger along the sealing edge of top part of air box ( on engine side) you can feel some slight underlations in the plastic moulding. I added some rubber gease along edge of air filter cartridge and problem fixed. It is an issue as the fine dust will eventually affect the MAF sensor.

The last time I took my MY2016 GX to the local Toyota dealer for a major service the mechanic, I mean the apprentice, did not seat the air cleaner housing cover properly after opening it. This allowed plenty dust to bypass the air filter element. I found there was dust on the inside of the filter. That was last service that I got Toyota to do. If I ever have to get Toyota to service my Prado again, I'll be checking the air filter cover before leave their yard!

Piggy is 100% correct. I have monitored mine for 12 months, there is no dust going around the filter, as you see in many YouTube videos and hear everyone stating.
The dust is coming through the actual filter membrane. There is no sealing problem with the filter and grease and metal shims will do nothing.
I installed a Ryco filter and it is a bit better.
I believe the filter element is not big enough for the engine so it’s sucking too hard and drawing the dust through the paper.
Nothing can be done really so I just use a good filter and it seems to minimise it.

I've never seen a filter with red rust stain on the clean side even though there was plenty on the dirty side even after 2000km on red dirt. I had plenty of sand and dirt on the rim of the upper airbox where the filter sits. I wonder if removing the mesh on the inside would reduce the pressure difference across the filter.
Given there is no evidence of dust getting around the rubber seal, it’s the only way it could be getting through.
Guys have greased the seal and used the spacing shim and it still gets through. The dust is that fine that I don’t think you’ll see a lot in the paper on the inside.
That’s just my take on it, as it’s something I’ve been watching for over 12 months as I was aware of the issue.
If anyone has has success with a shim or greasing the seal, I’d be interested to hear.
