Makes me nervous about what else wasnt done.

    Valve Clearance (diesel models)
"Check valve clearance using a thickness guage and adjust clearances if necessary"

The petrol models simply say "check tappet noise"....not the diesel model, its quite clear, use a thickness guage and this should be done with the engine stone cold initially. Show them the footnote on the page in the service booklet.

Given this particular forum topic, I specifically asked at the time of booking the 40,000Km service whether it was required overnight, and the response was that no service required an overnight, unless there is something specific being troubleshooted.

      The inconsistency is mildly annoying.

The inconsistency isn't surprising considering the amount of work it is to check and adjust them , it will depend on how committed they are to the trade

If they do it by ear id love to know how over the cold start diesel rattle on the D4D when they first start, should be doing properly, what you pay for. I no when i worked for them it was up on hoist and if nice and clean underneath then it simply had the engine oil done and none of the diff oils, transfer, bearing repack, none of it was done but certainly charged the customer for it, Im refering to the days of the 80 series cruisers, park her in the car park get the next one in to go.....Cheers Steve

I guess I am lucky. I have been a diesel mechanic for a long time and I do my own 5000km services. At the 10000km interval services, I use a very trust worthy local mechanic, I supply the oils and filters; he does the service and stamps my book. I know exactly what oil is in my car and exactly what's being done at services.

I've just had my 40k service done. I rang 3 dealers in and about Melbourne. Quotes ranged from $1050 to $550. I took the latter as it was the dealer I bought the car from. Happy with the results - as far as I can tell. They didn't keep it over night. None of them suggested they would.

                    Hello all,

I took my 150 in for its 24 month / 40,000 km service and was told that at 40,000 km I would need to have the diesel injectors removed to wipe off carbon deposits and ensure that the jets were clear. At a cost of about $350.00 extra over the fixed price service. There was no mention of tappet clearances being checked.

As I have only done 27,000 km they advised that I could defer the works until I reached 40,000 km.

Toyota fixed price servicing seems to be subject to the whims and ideas which are floated by the dealer. I complained when I filled in the Toyota questionaire after the service about their additional costs for planned work during the warranty period when the vehicle is under fixed price service agreements. No reply from Toyota. Toyota dealers are not my favorite mechanics and I will be looking elsewhere soon.

I would rather be driving a Land Rover but their service and support is even worse, at non existant.

                    regards

                    Ross

Well it's off to get a 5k oil change and I will be bringing ip the valve clearance check with them as printed in the service book that was not carried out (audible check only) at my 40k service.

Will see what they say but I can prempt "Well you see if we can hear a problem we will check" and I will say hmm well you see that is not what the book says!!!!

Spoke to my service dealer in TSV this morning when I picked mine up from a 20k service. He said "we don't need to check that at 40k".

I've been taking my car to the same dealer since new. The first time the valve clearances were checked was last week at the 120 000km service. The car was kept overnight and the valve cover was definately removed. I put a piece of foil tape across the rocker cover and head near the firewall. The tape was gone when I got the car back, the top of the engine also looked as if it had been steam cleaned. Not sure if they check the injector seals as well. The counter staff were not mechanics and didn't know.

Hilux with the 1KD-FTV engine was the same. Valve clearances checked every 40k and at the 120k they were adjusted which was a big day out. The car also had to be cold and cams needed adjustment to get back into range. When we checked again at 160k all was still in tolerance, so carefully put back together and leave it alone. Cheers

Is it absolutely not possible for them to squeeze this in if the car is dropped off first thing in the morning?

That's nice to know. They don't seem to be the most customer service oriented lot over there... Have only dealt with them once or twice but that's the gist I get from them and through other stories I've heard. Might take mine to Cairns or Mackay when it's up for it's next service. What's annoying is that the same mob own the Opposite Lock store.

Mind you, (in a prominent Brissie dealership) I caught the service guys out on a lie when it went in for 1,000KM... Nothing to say they didn't just drive it out the back, park it, then bring it out when I came back. Screams of a major discrepancy between Toyota's prescribed service schedule and what you actually get at many dealers.
