It's a common misconception that a consumer car with consumer accessories like a plastic snorkel is so you can drive with water up to your windshield.

Two things will happen before the snorkel will help in deep water:

    1. The car will float and the wheels will leave the ground causing you to go no where;
    2. The car will the flood full of muddy water destroying the electrics, the fabrics and placing corrosive mud and water into cracks and crevices as it sinks.

Both of these will occur before the snorkel has made effect in the engines air supply.

If the engine is still running and you get out on one piece you might just get away with a repairable write off. But since the snorkel is not airtight you would have ingested water and even a whisp of vapour is enough to bend a rod.

Most people who have claimed to cross uber deep water prob never realised that the bow wave was keeping the depth at the front a good 300mm lower due to momentum, thus rendering the snorkel as false security.

Still, each to their own, not my problem!
Snorkels are for raising the air intake location. This benefits both dust and water crossing. Yes, the wading depth is governed by the height of the vehicle, but a snorkel will help. Ask any good 4wd workshop.

    • Just had City Toyota fix the problem for me. My 2012 Prado with 71000km on the clock, had a loose bracket on the air filter box which they fixed and put shims in to stop the vibration.
Worked straight away like driving a new car. Recommend this. Such a difference.

      • * IMPORTANT NOTE * - FIX

There is a Toyota bulletin about this. There is an issue with the alignment of the air intake box not being centrally mounted enough through the drivers side front quarter panel. I took mine in and they confirmed that mine was already adjusted and still had the vibration. I wedged a rubber grommet between the packing foam around the air intake and the panel and problem solve.

Alternatives could be to mount a snorkel as this would also assist in the mounting and overall structure of the air intake, or use a silicon or rubber type compound to act as a buffer between the intake and the panel.

Good to know, explains why mine never had it as it was prob fixed at the 1000km inspection. Quite as a mouse.

Yep, also had a broken air box bolt that needed to be re-tapped. Gathered it was some monkey being too rough.....

I also got it back from a service with one of the air filter box clips undone and another work its way loose on its own. Ended up bending them to make a little tighter fit.

            • So I installed some Dynamat inside the guard tonight and thought I'd throw up a few pics.

Couldn't get the last trim clip our so just left the inner guard lining hanging by the last clip.

I noticed other posters saying that you have to replace the trim clips as they break when removing them. I managed to get them all out tonight without breaking any of them and then reused them when I put it back together.

The clips have barbs that you can bend inwards to release the clip. It's a bit fiddly but using a couple of jewellers screwdrivers I managed to insert them along the path of the red line indicated here and could lever the barb inwards to release it.

Here's the guard awaiting some Dynamat.

I used Dynamat Xtreme which I bought from these guys - Motoquipe. Ordered it on a Monday night and it turned up on Weds morning!

I bought two of "Dynamat Xtreme Wedge Pack" but only ended up using one of them.

I stuck all the leftover bits on the inner guard.

Now I just have to wait til morning to take it for a drive as I have a sick child in the room next to the garage and he'll wake up if I start the car! Here's hoping it fixes, or at least dramatically reduces, the 1500rpm vibration.

                • Has anybody got the number of the Toyota bulletin?
My local dealer is good to deal with as long as you can tell them the name/number of the bulletin.
They are just not up to speed with the bulletins that come out.
I know they should look it up but it just makes life easy if you have the details to guide them.
I took this approach with ECU upgrade, clunk on tail shaft (got the new one by the way) which I got from Pradopoint.

                  • Well the Dynamat seems to have made a significant difference. The vibration has almost disappeared, in fact if I didn't know there was an issue before I probably wouldn't pick it up now. The Dynamat cost me around $80 so a pretty cheap fix really assuming you do it yourself.

This is the same fix that I did when I started this thread, it makes the car a lot quieter, I also added Dynamat on various parts of the firewall behind the engine. The reason it works is that you are changing the resonant frequency of the intake chamber, which in this case is the guard cavity.A snorkel does the same thing in a different way. That combined with fixing the air intake vibration really helps. I drove a 2.8 recently and problem is properly sorted on them.

                        • G'day Steve, you were the inspiration for my attempt to fix the issue. As a helicopter pilot I know all about resonant frequencies, choppers will try to shake themselves apart if they're not set up correctly! Thanks for starting the thread!
