  • Fuel Consuption When Towing

I have the 2015 Prado 150 VX. I have just purchased a new Kakoda Caravan 20.6 ft. I am wondering what fuel consumption I can expect when towing the van on average. Without I am averaging 9.6 around the city and 8.9 in the country.

Perhaps budget to put a '1' in front of your current figures and anything less is a bonus - it depends on lost of variables so it'd be hard to judge.
    Cheers

I have 16.5 ft caravan and I can get from Brisbane to Rockhampton (600 km) and only use 100 litres which equates to 900 km per tank which is about 16.6 litres per 100km. Which I was pretty happy with compared to my LC100 I had previously. Cheers

Just got back from a 2000K trip and I got exactly the same from mine towing a 1.5 Ton Jayco with 4 adults and all the gear, the last stint was 630 K's from Kalbarri and that took 100 Lts, yes very happy with that.................

Tow 2.1T tandem expanda, 3 adults, 2 kids and all the crap that comes with them. On all our trips averaging around 15ltrs / 100 with the occasional 16-18 if very hilly and windy but mostly get in the 15's. That's by the servo fill ups and k's done. So far have done about 28,000k's getting those figures.

Just did a trip from ACT up to NT (Katherine) and back towing a 1400kg camper (2007 Complete Campsite) with 2 adults and 3 kids in a 2104 GXL TD. Stuck to the limit in NSW and QLD and 115-120 (GPS) in the NT. Worst for the trip was 16.5 into a head wind on the Barkly Highway (I blame the wife's lead foot as she was driving that leg ). The rest of the trip averaged 13.5. Obviously a bit lower in height to a caravan though.

Edit: This was real figures not the onboard computer.

I'm towing a van close on 2.4T and it certainly depends on the use of the right foot! If I can roll along at 80-90 then it varies from 12-15 but as soon as I need to keep up with highway speeds it increases to 15-16. Prolonged hilly driving, stop start traffic and headwind adversely affect the fuel economy.

I have had it as high as 18Ltr towing ther Vista on loose sand.

So as above, weight of van, terran and your left foot will all have a significant
                  affect.

Just to make you D4D guys happy, we towed our 1.5t CT for around 43,000k's last year and averaged 19L/100 in the V6 Petrol. And that was driving with a strong focus on fuel economy.

LOL, that was about the best for our trip, from Borroloola to Daly Waters, felt like we were going downhill with the wind on our backs...

I have found that the on screen figures on the incar screen are not overly accurate compared to real fuel consumption, my on screen figures told me I was getting 14.5 to 15 litres /100 but when I calculated fuel used and kms driven there were discrepancies. Only out by 1 or 2 litres not in my favour though.

Don't feel bad - the new Patrols use more than that around town unlaiden. (with 300kw under the bonnett though...)

                              Fuel Consuption When Towing

I have been towing our caravan around Victoria the last week or so at max tow weight (2500) and max GCM (5500 ish) and get around 15.75 l per hundred just poking along. When we first left home we were trying to cover longer distances as quick as reasonably possible and it was up around 18/100. I havent worked out the figures for towing around Tassie but expect it to be up in that range as well
