  • Blowout at 125 kmh

Last week travelling from Darwin to Alice Springs to visit family members we had the unfortunate incident of a blowout at 125 kmh (rear passenger side tyre).

We were about 50 km south of Elliott an almighty bang, nothing we could do, witnesses said the vehicle rolled at least four times, I can only remember the first roll.

My wife and I escaped with broken ribs, heaps of cuts and bruises, the main thing was that we both survived thanks to the Prado's safety features and ruggedness.

We cannot thank enough the people who stopped to help us especially the lady from the Elliot night patrol who was first on the scene. We were stabilised at the scene, then transported the 220 km to Tennant Creeek by ambulance where we spent the night at the hospital. The next morning we were flown to Alice Springs by the RFDS and both spent a few days in hospital.

The tyres I was running were Goodyear Wranglers and had at least 85% tread, don't really know what happened but as you can see in the pic the rear tyre was really shredded.

Once again my grateful thanks to everyone who stopped and helped us and who recovered all our posessions that were scattered far and wide.

I really loved that car so will now upgrade to the 150

Very sorry to hear that and glad that you escaped with non-life threatening injuries.

What was the date of manufacture of the tyres? Were you running a TPMS?

        What he said....
This and the earlier link showing the crash in Vic show how strong the Prados are. Would rather be in one f these than a buzz box.
        Speedy recovery Dershba

Wow, glad you got out of that one relatively ok. You should go out and buy a lotto ticket. Not many people walk away from crashes at that speed.

Glad you guys got out without more serious injuries, +1 on getting a TPMS on your next car.
Not many people realise what causes a "blowout", slow punctures are usually the cause (the carcass of the tyre heats up and fails).

Sounds to me tat a TPMS (which I have) would have been no hep. It was a sudden blowout on relatively good Wranglers.

A TPMS would give a warning on high or low pressure or high temp.

Wow. Glad that you guys will make a full recovery. Sure is a reminder of the importance of packing and securing items correctly to prevent random bits flying through a vehicle should it roll.

May I ask what Wranglers you had and do you know what the speed rating and load capacity was? I imaging it would be around the 180km/h mark.
