Great info thank you, I haven't received it yet. I did notice the order has only just switched to "picking" and it's been 12 days, so a bit annoyed but Automotive Superstore seem to be getting smashed with orders.

Hopefully I'll see it late this week, but given how long it's already taken, next week is more realistic and I wont have time to fit it this weekend anyway.

I also need to mount the front camera.

Are you generally happy with the unit and are you apple or android?

    • Yeah I do like the Kenwood units, I have a DDX919WS in our Corolla, and the DMX820WS in the Hilux.
The load time on startup is very fast and the reverse camera kicks in quickly on startup as well.
I use Android Auto. You do need to watch your cable lengths (keep them as short as possible).

When starting the car and plugging in the first time, I find sometimes it fails to launch Android Auto.
I just need to unplug the phone and connect again and it launches on the second try.

      • Why would cable length matter unless it's incredibly sensitive to voltage drop?

        • Finally got an update, big delays from Kenwood Australia on these newer models, Automotive Superstore are expecing their big pallet of gear today and have upgraded my shipping.

Not a huge deal as I've got no time this weekend to look at it anyway.

          • That specific company seems to always have shipping delays, they say in stock, but in reality its in stock at their supplier... my first unit came from them with similar stories about delays from Kenwood.

            • Pretty typical these days. There’s not enough margin in them for stores to keep stocks of everything (or worse get stuck with it if new models come out) so most places just drop ship direct now..

Crazy they aren't making some OK dollars on it given what it costs. Look at what a chinese Android headunit is worth on ebay, 3-400? This was 800 or something and probably comes out of the same factory but has slightly better firmware lol

                    • A month in and still nothing from automotive superstore with my head unit.

Have contacted repeatedly, they are useless

                      Apparently some big Kenwood/JVC shortage.

My 100w heating pads arrived though so I'm going to do some testing with those to see what sort improvement in oil heat up times I can get and do something with my second battery.

                      • Still waiting on the head unit, they tell me this week.... Not cool that they keep selling stock the don't have - would not give a refund and I just CBF fighting them so I continue to wait.

100w pad testing showed max current draw of like 5.3 amps, dropping a little as it warmed. That to me is more like 60 watts at 12-13v, eBay seller asked for pics, provided those, now asking for a video? Of what I have no idea. Anyway, installed one for shits and giggles but have only been able to test it for maybe 40mins which I don't think is enough to make a substantial difference (especially if only 60 watts), it did hold fifth locked up the hill at 60 on the way out of town this morning, which it rarely does unless it's been warmed right up. For the moment it's just rigged to a micro switch in the engine bay, I'll go turn it on earlier before I leave today, maybe 90mins or so, see what happens. The Prado sump is not flat either which doesn't help but the pad is quite flexible and the 3M seems decent.

Been having issues with the kings throttle controller, won't connect so I can change settings on the app, spoke to Kings and they just immediately refunded the price and said we're not stocking that item any more (I asked for a replacement under warranty). Weird as I can immediately connect on my partners iPhone and my older S7, just not my newer S10 anymore. Clearly a software/security issue but I will have to tinker to work out what's going on. As a throttle controller it still works no problem it's just the app that's causing me grief and only on my actual phone. Nice of kings to just give the $$ back straight away though.

                        • Still no head unit, nation wide issue apparently, oh well.

Went out for a little explore near my place, just to get to know the area which was helpful as I know where to go next time to find some tracks sooner.

It might not look like much in this pic, but this is the steepest decent I've done now, the extra weight of the wagon vs my mates ranger made the back end slide around a bit which was fun/exciting. He scrapped out up front coming off, I was OK up front but dragged the tow ball at the end. It was steeper at the beginning where you ramp over, the feeling of driving out when you can't see always gives me the heebie jeebies, but was a good learning experience.

Did some more playing with those 12v heating pads, at no point can I say they test in anyway that implies they are 100w, not current draw, resistance, nothing. eBay seller tried to BS but now appears to be offering me a partial refund.

Anyway, I found there's no way to see oil temp in the Prado through Torque, ECU just doesn't have a sensor for it, so I put the other one on the trans pan and it tests as about 6-7deg increase in temp per hour on the trans fluid temp. With both pads going the that's 8-9ah of battery drain. I can say that with a good hour or so pre-warm the trans and coolant are up to temp and smoother sooner, any appreciable gain for that effort/work? Who knows but it was a fun project.

I wired them via a relay and am using the 12v Aux Power Air onboard Switch shown earlier to trigger it from cabin. Could add an RF/Bluetooth trigger or a timing schedule but that will do on this little waste of time for now lol

                          • So Auto Superstore offered me $50 upgrade to the 920 instead so I just took it as it's $300 more expensive and I'll get it ASAP.

                            • That is a much better unit, wireless AA/Carplay DAB+ etc... nice one

                              • I don't think DAB+ exists in regional Vic? And if it does, I don't think a 2010 GXL has an antenna capable?

The HD screen will be nice and dual high output charging. I'm android and it's still wired android auto and I don't think I'll use wireless mirroring.

Missus is apple so wireless carplay will be nice for her when she navigates for us lol

At least I will get something finally!
