No not a joke at all. I have just returned from a 6 week trip to the US and Canada. I also did a similar trip in 2003. Until you have travelled extensively in the states you don't realise just how we are getting it so wrong here. The young people in the US have respect for there elders and other people. There is no road rage. Drivers are actually courteous. The police are not out revenue raising all they are trying to do is get traffic from A to B as quick as possible. I constantly travelled at 10mph over the limit as did everyone else without even a second look from the Highway Patrol. The people themselves go out of there way to help you when you ask or you only have to look like you need help and someone will ask are you OK. You get service in shops by people who are interested in helping you and who know there products and are also friendly. They know what customer service is, something that is sorely lacking here.
I have said it many times this country is run by the minority because the majority (and I'm one of them) won't get up of our backsides and do anything about it. I'll say it again if the Police are allowed to protect themselves with firearms then as citizens why aren't we. By the time the Police arrive to protect you with their weapons the damage is already done. I'm not saying everyone should be armed but we should have the option if you can pass the appropriate stringent tests etc. As everyone is aware the criminals are already armed and if anyone really wanted a firearm I'm sure you would be able to get one. The present laws certainly don't keep firearms from the criminals they only keep them from the average honest citizen.2012 GXL White Prado. I too have travelled across and around the USA. I stayed with a farming family in Scranton North Dakota. People openly carry handguns in old style holsters. It's legal as long as it's worn outside the clothing. You need a special permit to carry concealed. Not everyone was carrying though and their crime rate was zero. Had been for years. People didn't lock their house doors and they left their keys in their cars without fear of having stuff stolen. I stayed with a cop in Virginia. His agency made him carry a gun whilst off duty. If he was found without his OD gun he was fined by his employer. Like someone else has already stated, shootings were normally limited to low-socioeconomic areas, predominantly black/hispanic and most were drug fuelled or drug orientated. I've been to the US Marshalls' hall of fame and the FBIs' honour wall at Quantico where they have the names of all the fallen officers killed in the line of duty. It looked like a version of our own homnour wall at the War Memorial in Canberra. Those cops carried guns to not only protect themselves but to protect the public too. Nobody goes to work expecting to be killed. If the cops can't defend themselves how are they supposed to defend the public?
For a country that supposedly doesn't like firearms (handguns) there are more armed coppers in the UK than ever before. The African and Jamaican gang members can get their hands on AK47s for a mere 100 pounds and they have no qualms about shooting at anybody that gets in their way, not even the police. The weapon of choice for their Aussie immigrant counterparts seems to be the machete. Everyday in Perth there is at least one immigrant gang related incident involving assault and edged weapons. And it's getting worse. Better keep plenty of sharpened pencils around the house for when they bust open your door.Dave

You cover a lot of ground in all of this. The areas with lots of guns aren't safe just because people carry guns. More likely because people still respect each other. So yes that lends weight to the "guns don't kill people..." argument.Originally posted by Bushbasher View PostI too have travelled across and around the USA. But then of course you have to ask - If everything is ok, why do we need to carry weapons around?
Then we go to somewhere like South Africa or anywhere thats plagued with gangs, unemployment, drugs, etc. Openly carrying will get you shot quicker. Kids get shot for phones and wallets. Shoot first to make sure the person you are robbing doesn't get a chance to shoot back. Parts of America are like this. Detroit, Chicago, Washington.... Marseille in France is like this now. Fueled by unemployment. The ABC did a story the other night. The cops admit theres only so much they can do and they are losing. Sound familiar?
I lived in the UK in the mid 90's when they were debating arming police due to the alarming rate of firearms incidents. They chose not to, fearing that criminals would arm themselves in response and once that happened there would be no going back. It looks like the decision has been made for them.
So to our little island. (Before you start calling for a bill of rights, read our current constitution. Very, very few people have the slightest clue whats in it and the rights and obligations contained therein. Start here - http://tomgrimshaw.com/your%20will%2...0be%20done.pdf Its worth a read if such things interest you).
We don't have the right to defend ourselves. Nor to privacy. You can be sued if a burglar hurts themselves whilst robbing you or if a courier slips over whilst leaving a parcel on our front step. Yay democracy and freedom. If you're in trouble and call the cops, you will be lucky if they show up a week from Tuesday. Unless of course theres some fines to be issued.
So whats the answer? Everyone needs to be gainfully employed? Everyone needs a purpose and good parents and to be brought up right? Public floggings and hangings?
For now I'm cracking cleansing ale. Who wants one?Last edited by Beach; 22-09-2013, 07:22 PM.

We all have the right to defend ourselves but the enlightened ones expect that we will only do so using reasonable force. What's reasonable when you are woken at 2am by an intruder armed with a knife standing over your bed? Don't do what one fella did here in WA several years ago. He was woken and went outside to confront the intruder in the backyard. He stabbed the intruder and was charged with manslaughter. Apparently, he should have waited for the guy to break in and enter before he stabbed him.
Just be glad we haven't signed up for human rights like they have in the UK. The crims have more rights than the average Joe citizen. Murderers have walked free because they were not afforded their basic human rights. Too bad the rights of the victims didn't come first.Dave

probably because he wasn't defending himself from imminent harm when the person was outside the house and he inside, when 000 could have been a more appropriate answer??Originally posted by Bushbasher View PostDon't do what one fella did here in WA several years ago. A friend recently commented that their teenage son and his friend attended a firearm course,
the boys had joined a gun club and wanted to obtain their fire arm license.
They commented that they were the only two of Australian descent in the class, the rest of the class was made up of people from middle eastern descent.
I was pondering trying to obtain a firearm license for remote travel but quickly realised it would not be possible unless I was either a member of a shooting club or knew someone who had a property where I could shoot.
It would appear that there is a lot of middle eastern descent members of gun clubs or a lot with friends who have properties they can shoot on.
I also know of someone who set up a gun club to obtain a license, it had two members, the
president and the secretary!
Maybe we should start a PP gun club
Cheers

Leigh, in Victoria you can put down hunting as a reason for the license and State Forest qualifies, so you don't need to know someone or join a club if you don't want to.
General comment about firearms, frankly it's too late, they have been invented and it is impossible to completely remove them from society. Those that want them will get them. Australians should consider fixing the local laws first before pointing out other countries failings.

I didn't know that, I thought you had to nominate a property owner and have written permission form them.Originally posted by wifecallsmegrumpy View PostLeigh, in Victoria you can put down hunting as a reason for the license and State Forest qualifies, so you don't need to know someone or join a club if you don't want to.

I'll have to investigate again.
