Old bullet and spring on the left, new on the right. Push-on star washer not shown but included in the kit. See instructions below.

The reason why this is becoming a common problem on the automatic 120 Prados is because the track that the pin follows becomes worn. This results in the short bullet/pin slowly coming out of the collar that it sits in. Given the right conditions, the pin will simply fall out and the gear selector becomes floppy. However, in a handful of cases, the selector becomes really stiff and if forced, may break the collar. If this break has gone too far, you will need a new shifter assembly.

There are 2nd hand shift assemblies available from wreckers but the design fault with having a short bullet/pin and unknown amount of wear in the track will mean that the problem will occur again.

Although this is a repair kit, it is best that this mod is done as a preventative measure before the plastic collar is broken in the shift selector should the selector become stiff. In the majority of cases, the selector just becomes floppy.

Shift the gear lever to either R or N.

Now lift the centre console by gripping near the cup holders. Do not lift off completely as there is a cable attached underneath.

Look under the centre console for a white connector right next to the handbrake and unplug it.

The centre console can now be lifted off. Lift off the front edge first and clear the 2 gear levers. Then swing the front edge to the passenger side to slide the centre console off the handbrake.

Note: Sometimes, the yellow inserts on the clips that hold the panels and trim in place will fall off. Check that the yellow inserts are not missing or the panels won't snap back in place. See pic in post #4 below.

Remove the push on star washer on the pin at the rear of the shift selector.

Lift the lid from the rear (where the pin was) to reveal the bullet. Remove the bullet and dig out the spring.

Insert the new spring and bullet.

Clean and re-grease the track on the lid.
Re-install the lid, taking care to put the white plastic 'thingo' that sits under the SHIFT LOCK button back in its place.

Insert the pin and install the new push-on star washer onto the pin. A 7mm 1/4" drive socket was ideal to do this.

The centre console is now good to be re-installed. Just follow the instructions above in the reverse order.

Remember to plug the connector back in!

This is the picture of the underside of the centre console. Note the yellow inserts may fall off during disassembly. Make sure all are present and accounted for.

Did Mine last Wednesday, what a difference, my shift was very stiff, I had stopped going past D as almost had to hit lever to move, now just a couple of fingers to move throught pattern. I used Super Lube http://www.super-lube.com/ Synthetic grease with teflon (Superwinch use it in their winch gearboxes). I was surprised to see the amount of wear in the FRP (fibre reinforced plastic) of my cover, probably explains why so stiff.

Good to know that the kit is working well.
Strange though that my 'track' doesn't look like yours. Did you buy the Prado 2nd hand? I think there's been a repair done previously and the track was replaced.
