No, mine isn't more worn. The track is moulded into the cover of the gear shift. Yours looks like someone has put a layer of material (what you call the FRP) over the original track and the top layer has worn down to expose the fibre.

I would open up the box again and see if you can remove that material and revert back to the original track. I think the previous owner encountered the same problem and had a different approach to solve it.

Photo prob doesn't show it well, the light shows the wear well but makes the track look different colour. I think the plastic used to make the cover looks to be FRP, usually when moulding FRP the surface has a shine to it, but if surface is removed, you see the firbe giving a rough appearance (similar to concrete)
      This photo shows it better

i know im digging up an older thread but i just wanted to say thankyou to Andrew for his kit. I broke my shift lever recently (well it wasnt broken - the bullet fell out, never to be seen again) and installed Andrew's kit on the weekend, such a quick and easy mod with great results.

you can see the track that the old bullet has worn out after i cleaned the old grease off:

        Cheers,
        Scott.

You're welcome Scott. It looks like the wear in the track is what's causing the bullet to jump out or crack the top of the collar holding the bullet. I've had a few now who have bought the kit after experiencing the gear lever jammed or become totally sloppy during a trip. So based on your pic and waltec's it would be wise for the older 120s (or those who like to shift through the gate a lot) to have the bullet changed out before the inevitable happens in the middle of 4WDriving.

It's indeed a brilliant, cost effective fix. When I did mine (my holder was cracked at the top) I was concerned that the crack might propagate with the new bullet, giving me the same problem later down the track. So I used some safe-tie wire as insurance.

Excellent! Glad to be of service. Might have to update my installation instructions with a time to repair and the beverage needed to achieve that time

Yes it will most likely solve the issue.

I'd only dismantled it 2 or 3 times before, Andrew. Each time trying to come up with a solution (fail) Plus, my friendly Chicken Stick is great (fast) for popping trim clips without damaging plastic

Sorry Andrew, I have to resign as your 'unofficial' WA distributor of the repair kit - yes, after eight months I have finally got round to fitting the kit. I know it's only a ten minute job but I never seemed to get round to doing it and kept selling my kit to others who needed it as a repair rather than as a prophylactic as I have done. This is the fourth kit I've had but the first I've actually fitted

"Although this is a repair kit, it is best that this mod is done as a preventative measure before the plastic collar is broken in the shift selector."

This sounds like a very cheap and easy fix for a seemingly common problem. I'm wondering how common this is? I'm on my second 120 and I'm a habitual shift changer. I did 270,000klms on my first 03 120 and I'm on 130,000klms on my current 09 120. Even though I'm a habitual shift changer, I've not had any issues, No sloppiness or tightening of the shifter, both worked/working faultlessly. Is it a "given" that this problem will occur or have I got a better touch than others?
