I had Raptorsc send me a tune for my 2013 V6 GXL.
As some background, my rigs usage is <10k km a year of which 5k of that is towing a large 2.4tonne enclosed race car trailer.
Towing this trailer was a tad annoying at times since the auto would drop out of lock at the slightest hint of load, and auto temps would soar.
Power from the V6 is ok overall, though felt a little doughy around town. (though also take into account the prado replaced a turbo territory, and my daily is a apr chipped golf, so its always going to feel sluggish in comparison...) Once the revs come up it gets along all right.
I did the airbox mod a month or so ago, and this made a noticeable difference to top end go. It really gets up and goes when you sink the boot and get the revs up. .
I fitted the tune a few weeks back. initial impressions were a big improvement from the auto's behaviour. Power seemed better though didn't seem as dramatic as a claimed 50hp boost would feel. though was definitely smarter off the mark around town.
Yesterday was it's first tow test. Only to Phillip Island and back, but 200km round trip of moderately hilly terrain.
This really showed up the performance advantage of the tune. It would pull the higher gears much, much easier.
Normally it wouldn't hold 5th on anything but a flat, and even then would flare up constantly.
This time it was quite happy to cruise along in 5th even at 1800rpm.and would hold 4th up even the steep climbs.
It also was much better at getting up to speed off lights etc, without having to rev it out to do so.
So the dyno charts claim 90Nm gain at 2700rpm, and based on my towing experience I'd suggest that's probably on the money.
It certainly pulls much harder in the mid range, which is probably a mixture of the auto behaving itself, and the extra power helping hold the gears also.
I may still put it on a dyno for a with/without tune comparo just for my own interest once I find a 4wd dyno close by, but regardless of this I'm very happy with the mid range boost that it now has.
The airbox mod gave it heaps of top end, and the tune has filled in the bottom/mid range to match the top end.
So, overall very happy with the outcome. It did do as it said on the packet..
