  • Raptor tune is in.

I had Raptorsc send me a tune for my 2013 V6 GXL.

As some background, my rigs usage is <10k km a year of which 5k of that is towing a large 2.4tonne enclosed race car trailer.
Towing this trailer was a tad annoying at times since the auto would drop out of lock at the slightest hint of load, and auto temps would soar.
Power from the V6 is ok overall, though felt a little doughy around town. (though also take into account the prado replaced a turbo territory, and my daily is a apr chipped golf, so its always going to feel sluggish in comparison...) Once the revs come up it gets along all right.

I did the airbox mod a month or so ago, and this made a noticeable difference to top end go. It really gets up and goes when you sink the boot and get the revs up. .

I fitted the tune a few weeks back. initial impressions were a big improvement from the auto's behaviour. Power seemed better though didn't seem as dramatic as a claimed 50hp boost would feel. though was definitely smarter off the mark around town.

Yesterday was it's first tow test. Only to Phillip Island and back, but 200km round trip of moderately hilly terrain.
This really showed up the performance advantage of the tune. It would pull the higher gears much, much easier.
Normally it wouldn't hold 5th on anything but a flat, and even then would flare up constantly.
This time it was quite happy to cruise along in 5th even at 1800rpm.and would hold 4th up even the steep climbs.
It also was much better at getting up to speed off lights etc, without having to rev it out to do so.

So the dyno charts claim 90Nm gain at 2700rpm, and based on my towing experience I'd suggest that's probably on the money.
It certainly pulls much harder in the mid range, which is probably a mixture of the auto behaving itself, and the extra power helping hold the gears also.

I may still put it on a dyno for a with/without tune comparo just for my own interest once I find a 4wd dyno close by, but regardless of this I'm very happy with the mid range boost that it now has.
The airbox mod gave it heaps of top end, and the tune has filled in the bottom/mid range to match the top end.

So, overall very happy with the outcome. It did do as it said on the packet..

An engine tune wont help with the gearbox hunting gears or Torque converter or pan temps. Did their tune do anything for the gearbox side of things? You'd likely be better to fit up a torque converter lockup module to sort out the lockup points and high temp issue. For towing they are great..

The tune specifically changes shift behaviour by altering torque limits for lock up.

It can also alter throttle ratio of you ask, though many have a controller already.

And Rascal, take those figures with a grain of salt as they were done in 3rd gear whick skews the results. I'm referring the the dyno sheets on raptors webpage which were discussed at length on the FJ forums.

No doubt there's more power and torque, but it's not 50hp and 90Nm.

Still the best bang for buck tuning option going for us petrol guys though and I will be doing it as well.

My question is valid, nowhere did it mention a gearbox remap in the original post. Plenty of engine tunes change gearbox behaviour simply due to the different torque outputs. However they wont help with shift patterns / speeds and TQ lockup. This is totally different however to remapping a gearbox which has other benefits.

Makes sense now, it didn't mention gearbox remap earlier.
So what are the temps of Pan and TQ doing now and with the remapped box and how are the new lockup points?

Sorry, should have specifically mentioned it does remap the auto.

Before temps would be >100 if I didn't pull it back to 4th. Now it holds 5th and stays locked so temps stay around the 70 is usually sits on.
It also noticeably shifts gears rather than slurring them between gears, so it feels more like an auto now rather than a CVT as it did before.
At 80kmh it will drop into top and lock, where it used to fan between 4th/5th and never really sure if locked or not. (in fact temps used to suggest not)

It will also drop back and hold 4th gear locked up hills in 'drive', where before would never lock up unless you selected S+ and 4th before the hill and backed off to get it locked and then only used 10% throttle to keep it locked. Now you can use quite a lot of throttle and it just pulls up in 4th.

Ordered this same tune last week - got the device, downloaded factory file, sent if off - Waiting since Thursday now for re-mapped file to come back

How long did they take to send yours back?

Planning on doing Dynos runs before and after to see if its really making any actual rather than placebo difference :-)

I think mine was 3 or 4 days turn around time.
I will be interested to see your Before/after Dynos.

its not a Omg/that’s amazing change but it is certainly noticeable.

i wouldnt be downloading a tune. each car is different. use the tune as a base line then dyno tune and customize it from there on an actual dyno that is what any professional does

Whilst I don’t disagree you could get a better result by vehicle specific Dyno/tuning, you need to put things in perspective . It’s a 2.3 tonne truck, not a sports car so chasing the very last kw Is hardly worth the effort. A canned tune provides a good bump in grunt for not much money, so is plenty good enough for most.

personally I love the extra mine got from a simple, painless exercise.

Of course custom tuning is better, but look around the industry and see how common basic remapping is and how consistent the results are.

Audi/VW in particular are very popular for mail order tunes, good results too.

I've tuned enough cars myself and had enough discussion with Raptor to be comfortable this was going to be fine.

Ok, tune arrived yesterday arvo.. uploaded no pro as per instructions (98RON tune).

went for about a 8k squirt around the hood and honestly - as it stands feel like I’ve pissed $1300 against a wall...

to be fair it was only just loaded and may need a little time to bed in - real tell rail for me will be towing the caravan as many have said, need to pretty much hold 4th otherwise it constantly drops back from 5 etc.

will drag the van out in the next couple of days and report back on the difference if any.

                            Interesting feedback.

What's the rest of your setup? Panel filter? airbox mod? Intake chambers removed? Throttle controller?

I have all those done and for me the tune brought it all together properly.

I'm half way through my 3rd 98 tank now and I'd say the performance has peaked, as in it has gotten a bit better with each tank.

I was up Buffalo yesterday and am always reminded in that instant that there's more torque down low.

On the first tank I have no doubt I could detect a bit of pinging in the top end and it didn't feel as good.

Another mate of mine has been a bit underwhelmed also, but his main goal was lock up control, and he ended up buying a lockup controller and not being 100% happy with that also. He added a throttle controller and did the intake similar to me and is much happier.

4L is a decent size motor, it needs to breath.

K&N Filter, Airbox mod (cutting out restrictions), Snorkel - no throttle controller as I asked for throttle curve to be done as part of the tune (honestly can't see that having been done)

Jury is out for me but I'll wait for a couple of tanks and a decent drive with the van before I make my final stance.

Towing the caravan will be the real test - I'll be able to tell straight away if there has been any difference when towing the van.
