I am going to move up from the 2005 petrol 120. 195,000 trouble free kms, but time to upgrade. Drove an Evererest and was not super impressed, felt small inside and finish was cheap compared to Prado.
Drove the new 2.8 Prado and it's a nice wagon. In NZ the VX is the mid range, and it's well specced. Not sure the 2.8 is going to be enough after 10 years of 4.0 V6 grunt? Anyone moved from petrol to be 2.8? Thoughts? Advice?

Neither does Toyota unless you have paid for an expensive road-side assist with them and even then the fine print will show that they'll only go about 100km anyway.Any car can break down but I'll never buy another Mitsubishi because the company doesn't care less if you break down thousands of kms from home.

God made lemons and Ford put wheels on them sums them up perfectly for me every single one cost me dear and I bitterly regret paying good money for all of them NEVER go there again.......................Originally posted by nanbar View PostMy 2c worth? I understand about the engines freeing up but I remember how well my 3.0 went when it was new.
What's really exciting is what people are claiming with an ECU modifying chip.
Toyota have obviously de-rated this engine.
That said I'm going to give the Pajero and Everest a good look as they seem much better value.
As for resale that's good if you wan to turn your cars over every few years and it does reflect on the cars popularity.
Anyway please keep this great thread going it is very helpful to buyers.

Traded my 2008 GXL petrol with 150k's for an auto white 2.8L TD.
$40K change over at Torque Toyota. Deal was $23k on the trade-in with $63k on new one. Probably could have done better with a private sale but very happy with service and the deal. Was offered 16k trade at another deal... pfft.
Didn't buy into any of the after market gear.

Pajero is certainly cheaper. I have a Prado because my 2012 Pajero (with 45k on the clock) broke down in regional WA with diesel engine problems. After 2 weeks, the dealer said that they had no idea when it would be fixed and had no idea what was wrong with it. The dealer was doing his best but Mitsubishi were completely unhelpful and told me that they took up to 4 days to respond to each dealer query.

As they say, just my 2c worth.

I got the $61k from the Ford web site. Perhaps you could haggle a better deal.
The diesel Territories may end up with better resale than the petrol ones, but there are no 10 year old diesels yet to compare.
Good luck selling any 2005 Territory for $20k. Apparently the ex-police ones go for $25k at auction with around 100,000km on the clock - but they are only a few years old.
The engine in the Territory was fine after 220,000km but everything else around it was falling apart. I just don't think Ford's age very well.
They are certainly more 'car like' to drive, but no real off-road ability due to the lack of ground clearance for a start. I'd be comparing them to a Kluger - not a Prado.

I would reconsider your numbers a little, a top of the range Titanium should be had for under 50k. At work the rail maintenance guys use the diesel AWD Territories and absolutely love them. They were getting 20k at auction with over 200 clicks on them so good resale on them seeing they buy the base model for high 30s. i haven't followed auction results for a couple of years now so now are probably less.Originally posted by Stoo View PostResale value was a very important consideration for me. I just sold my 10 year old Ford Territory AWD Ghia (220,000 km) at auction for $3,000.
The brand new price for the equivalent top model Territory is $61k the same as I just paid for my new 2.8L GXL Prado.
I'm hoping that my Prado will still be worth $18,000 in 10 years.
I'll probably save at least $15,000 in fuel over the next 10 years (I was getting 17L/100km from the Territory).
I'd hope to save at least $5,000 in repairs based on Toyota reliability v Ford.
So overall, my next 10 years of motoring should cost $35K less than the last 10 years in the Territory - and I can actually take it off road!
I actually would look at the diesel Territory as they drive 2 or 3 generations better than the Prados and Patrols at work but they have no low range and only 2.7 tonne towing capacity. So Fortuner for me.

Agreed - mine just tipped over 3,000kms and is opening up nicely. Its much more responsive that when it had 7kms on the clock and is driving very nicely now.Originally posted by slipperyskakadu View PostYou need to compare apples with apples though. Your comparing the exceed to a gxl. You need to compare the kakadu with the exceed or the gxl with the glx for a fair comparison. Of course driving the exceed with all the bells and whistles is going to feel better. Your surrounded by luxury.
As for the 2.8. Try find one to drive that's done at least 1000kms. Mine only started opening up now and its on 7500km. Power wise there isn't alot of difference. Its a million times quiter though and 15 years newer than the 1kd. I'd agree with you at first it feels sluggish but i love driving mine now and it's definitely learnt my driving style.
