MalcomM, not a bad idea. Simple single or dual connector comming out ~1 inch from the top of the extension poll, then the T-piece can simply slide on and off with a simple pin with the lights connecting via a short cable + connector.

(Yes, I get to include my pin picture again).

Whatever the finished product AMTS, I will be happy. Keep up the good work.

    • I have had a very quick skim through the 11 pages, so if I missed it sorry, but is it possible to mount an antenna on the bracket or weld something onto it.

I would like to fit one to boost phone reception, this would make for a practical solution. Fitting a bullbar seems overkill just so I can fit a bracket for an antenna

      • All good ideas guys. Definitely taking them on board.

Max, have you considered mounting the antenna on a roof rack? Or do you have clearance issues?

        • If its only a phone antenna, you can get ones that stick to the glass. Otherwise thats a long cable run which is not a good thing for RF.

the really good ones for vehicles are the 1mtr long thicker broomstick antennas, they still get respectable results even with the long rf lead they come with. I used one extensively for my nextg modem, a telstra Turbo Elite MF60 that has an external rf port. Its surprising what range you can get with it.
The magnetic base stuff is good on paper or manufacturers rating, but it doesn`t deliver in the real world. Other small antennas only pick up a few db, which is better than nothing, I guess.

Anyway, that is what I have got and can always mount it on a caravan on a bracket so I can fold it down.

I wanted to use one in the car and run the cable to a phone cradle, but may have to look at a different antenna set up for the car.
The loss in coax cable, whether its a 1m run compared to 3 m is not worth worrying about.

              • Hi Amts, Have you work out a price for the spacer +/- the pole?

                Comment

                • Approx $65 for the spacer. $40 for the light pole bracket. Still working on the tee bracket.

                      Hi Andrew,

I don't need the spacer kit any more, but I would like one of these bolts. Possible?

Sorry, not quite yet. The pole isn't that great after using while away. The screw lock mechanism will probably not last. MalcolmM pointed me to something else and these poles looks a lot more long lasting and more readily available at Bunnings. Here is the link to the pole http://www.austbrush.com.au/extensio...dual-lock-pole. Unfortunately, the pic on the website does not appear.

This website has the picture of it http://www.unipro.com.au/index.php?p...mart&Itemid=43

The locking mechanism is more robust and the height is at set heights. You can probably drill new holes into the aluminium extrusion. The yellow bit is fibreglass (wished it wasn't yellow, though).

The aim is to then use the ally cast tip as the base for the light to mount to and the light can then be removed when travelling. I had 2 lights up top and they make the whole thing top heavy. The next thing is to make the light swivel. More drawings to come.

                            • Here is the CAD model of how the light is assembled on the cast ally adaptor from the telescopic pole.

The M8 bolt that comes with these types of lights is replaced with a longer bolt with a reduced M5 thread at the end. The red washers are nylon washers which allows the light to swivel. The dark green washer is a custom washer to provide a seat for the M5 nylock to bolt up against.

                              • Much better pole Andrew. I'm sure it'll all be worth the wait.

Is the M8/5 bolt one of your customs?

I was going to shorten the threaded roller plug but I guess if done your way, the pole can still do double duty as a paint pole
