Hi mate, I have just went and had a read of D4Detonation x 6 pages and photos. Wow, you blokes have had a rough time. I really feel for you. I think I will start to pray for Chardo every night now. My GXL is the basic model. No frills or safety packs or traction control but I luv it. A very basic cracked dash though. Not as bad as a cracked piston. I hope the new donk gives you a good run mate. I may have even seen you up here as I live in Adelaide River and do all the mowing of Parks through town and rest areas and towns. Batchelor A/River. I must go as work calls me once again. Take care and Thanks. Bill.

What model is your 120. The GXL with safety pack has the traction control as the VX and Grande. From what i've seen the electrics for the T/C are slightly different with Traction control.
As the motor failures this has been documented by many in other posts on PP. From the research i have done almost all the failed motors where chipped and towing at the time of failure. Interestingly on ours we had towed the camper to Cape York and back with no issues but the Kakadu trip killed it.

Still looking for the circuit Trav designed.

MRW82. Poo. Mark, I didn't know that you blew your motor. Last time I talked to you, you were heading out to Cunninghams Gap towing Zook. That was in August. Where were you when it popped? Was it towing? That is real scary especially with Rustys going as well. I don't know what I would do if Chardo went as I luv the 120. It has just been so good for us with the Pop tool van.Did you go auto again with the 90. I have just ordered a 7 mm blank plate for the EGR. I read pall the bits last night. You blokes are always a long way ahead of me in gadgets. Mark, does the relay pin nos. look ok in my blurry image? Thanks for checking for me. I need it. Nite mate. Bill.

Rusty62 you have done it again. Another bit of technology I haven't even heard of. If I get my lock up kit working with normal 5 pin relays, later I would like to try my luck with the mini duel latching relays you are using. I am finding I am getting quite excited as iI get closer to the mark. That is scary having the two of you with popped motors. I will be hearing all sorts of noises now. OK , must go for T, and another beer. Take care .Nite Bill.

    Torque converter lock up

    Hello boys,
Re my last post on previous page ,
Rusty seems to answer my questions to lock or not to lock I still can't understand why we can't hold down a gear and lock that way but willing to be convinced.

    Cheers Alan.

Interesting how our confidence drops when something goes wrong. Understand your concern re the holed piston. After i rebuilt ours it took 6 months to start to trust it again. Didn't help when the injectors started to cold knock after 20000 km. We have now fixed the injectors with a replacement set and now 50000km of reliable motoring later, including the 'take 2' trip to Kimberly's i now consider the engine to be good and trustworthy.

Back to subject on the T/C lockup. I haven't been able to find the circuit Trav designed for mine, but also starting to think it's not 100% needed. I will keep mine in as i like to lockup in 3rd climbing ranges when towing. But installing the cooler was more beneficial in reducing auto temperature. I keep accurate fuel figures and the T/C lock has not helped at all in towing tests. If anything it used more fuel. I now will change to 4th and allow the T/C to lock via the ecu instead of trying to hold 5th locked. The engine tends to labour at 2000 rpm but spins freely at 2600 rpm when going up a small climb.
Not a fan of locking in 1st low when descending, preferring to use cautious left foot brake pressure even with the trailer.

In summery our lockup kit cost under $100 and many hours of testing and checking the values with special oscilloscopes and some trial and error on resister values. If i was to do this again would use a pulse wide modifier instead of a resister (Travs words). It was a fun project to do.

    Rusty.

It wasn't very clear zoomed in but I could see the 21w load resistor is in the right place. From what I could make out all looks good.

I had a couple of reasons for selling the 120, financial being one, peace of mind/reliability being another. After the holed piston I always had doubt about if/when it could go again. As much as 'experts' crap on about keep up the maintenance and checks all will be good, I still believe it's pot luck and there is no real way of knowing if or when it could go bang.

Sorry guys, my computer work is as bad as my auto electrician bits. I hope you are able to enlarge it enough and still see what I have for you. Can anyone please give me some feedback. Nite all. Bill.

MRW82 Hi Mark, Wow, what made you do that?? Do you find the 90 series a better machine, is it a turbo diesel engine? I see in your photos your Suzuki getting the suspension worked out. Looks good. I have a 1983 Daihatsu Scat resin top shortie. Has a 2.8L diesel, 5speed, 5000lbs winch and wide 8 inch wide wheels. I go out gold detecting and the little girl (Winny) takes me where ever I need to go. Some pretty tough places too.
Mark I am attempting to attach a copy of your diagram, (minus the dash light relay). I haven't done this scanning thing before. Are you able to look it over and let me know if Im going in the right direction. Thanks and cheers Bil.

G'day bill, I'm still around. But I've sold the 120 and gone back to a 90 series.

I can't remember what size resistor I used on the TCM loop. I'll try and find out.
On the wire that goes from +trigger relay to lock up solenoid you need another resistor, this one was a 21w relay, a load resistor for led indicators is perfect for the job. This reduces voltage to the solenoid to 5v so it won't burn out the solenoid.

MRW82, Hi Mark, are you on deck again yet??? I have hit a hurdle. The boys are trying to help me, but I really don't know which way to go now. I think I have my relays ready but am just needing a bit of back up with the resistor size, type etc. Are you able to help with an update please. Rusty is going to try to find a post of his circuits as well. Thanks ALL. Take care and cheers Bill.

Peter_mcc, Hi mate . As per above post, I had a very quick look in Darwin yesterday in Jaycar. I still don't know exactly what I'm looking for yet. Ashdown Ingrams may have the aluminium heatsink resistors but everything was closed by that time of the day. The VBs tasted good anyway. I am taking it one day at a time in between work and play to see what I am doing. No great rush. I want to do this right. All the best, Thanks and cheers Bill.

GUV, Hi Mate, thanks for the advice, but I have always been a tinkerer and to construct and install something like this would be just great, sort of "I did it my way " type thing. I love your Shortie. Not a lot of those little beasts around.

Rusty62, sorry so long getting back to you. Have been up in the big smoke ( Darwin ) for the weekend, or a bit of it. I had a quick look in Jaycar but no heat sink resistors as you said. I tried to have a look at the duel latching relays as well. NO, none. I really don't know whether to carry on with Marks or if you can put up your circuit and I will see what is involved. Did you have a chance to have a look for it. How do you fit the latching relays??? are the soldered through the little board?? I was looking at the little boxes as well. So many little bits to look at in Jaycar. Definitely a mens shop.

Dabeanian, Hi Mate, I think I will leave your question to someone that could explain it better to you than myself. I know how it goes, but I don't have a good way with words on this type of technology. All the best.Take care all. Cheers Bill.

    Hello boys,
Must say most of this is way way over my head just don't follow electronic terminology , ( it's got to be join the 2 red wires then the black ones just cut the blue one off and tape up the green one ) any more and I'm buggered, only just sorted out a relay .
just got an 09 120 1kd after the 1kz ,not used it yet getting injectors done tomorrow, got it for a bit more towing power for the caravan,

Now from what I've read this TC lockup is the thing I need to help towing, but can't get my head around the difference between the TC locker and just dropping down a gear , is there a difference??? Seems the same to me can't get my head around it,
would be a cheaper option than putting a cooler for the gearbox or am I wrong again?
I must start reading from page 1 again see if I'm missing something, but would love an explanation,

    Cheers Alan.

Try this for a resistor (coming from Darwin so you should get it quicker than one from China)
