rhino rack "back bone" roof rack system

    Hi Nebulous, Pretty sure that is the same rack as mine, tray with permanent side rails on RLCP23 feet. Yes mine sits noticeably higher at the front than the rear but as the car sits bum high the tray is actually fairly level compared to the ground level

      Nebulous,
      Make sure the feet are placed in the right spots as they are unique. The legs however are identical. Due to the extra length, it is probably just an optical illusion that the rack is higher at the front due to the roof curving down.

      As for the 'security' allen key, I just swapped them out with hex head bolts.

        Hey Nebulous, just a thought, have you put a level on the rack? I just tried a level on my roof and it curves quite dramatcally as it gets closer to the front of the vehicle, it actually has a slight curve all the way from the rear rail mount point and is not level with the ground.
        I would think it would just make sense that the legs for the platform would keep the platform level to the ground and due to its length the front would be higher. As brogers said, the shorter platforms would not be so obvious in this regard.

          amts - at this stage we're not certain the difference in height for the 120, but we will certainly be trying to get it as low as we can without compromising it's usability (strapping/ cleaning as mentioned before).

          rwo - Can you please let me know what system you're running on your legs? It's a Pioneer?

            They told me, they have changed suppliers, and are apparently, on a boat.. Maybe that "slow boat from China".. The guys at pride auto, are giving me the six feet to use till the backbone arrives in May? But I don't really need to fit it just yet, big trip is in August, but at least, either way I'm covered.. I was just a bit pived yesterday, that I've paid for it in full, and nothing said about not being available.. Not really very nice thing to do what they did.. Imo..

              Thanks for the comments everyone, When I said level with the roof maybe I should have said parallel to an imaginary straight roof line from front to back ( I know the roof is not a actual straight line) I might try and swap the two front feet with the two back ones and see how that looks, as Amts mentioned I'm pretty sure they are in the correct positions as per the instructions, but you never know it might have been a "typo" that Rhino-Rack did not pick up, I have seen a few others getting around that look the same and even photos of other PPers in other roof rack posts. There is nothing wrong with it just that it looks a bit "out of whack" and I thought I would bring it to the attention of Will at Rhino-Rack. Cheers.

                  Hey Nebulous, I think you'll find with the Backbone it should have a "flatter" profile, following the line of the roof. Although it won't be absolutely even front and rear, it should be a little closer. With the lower profile you should hopefully notice a significant difference. From the image you've posted, I can absolutely see where your concern is. As a few others have stated, the longer trays certainly accentuate that difference.

                  In regards to the "Security" Allen keys. You'll find that a very large group of the Rhino Engineering team are on the same side as you (me included). I don't have any influence over the allen key situation but I believe there are plans on making a change.

                  Heard loud and clear! We had a 120 Prado in a few weeks ago and measured up. I'm currently in the process of drawing it up and receiving samples.

                  Hey HaaHn, thank you for the measurements, they definitely came in handy - the car we got in did not come with the sunroof.

                  I tested with the existing Backbone - we absolutely cleared the sunroof, based off of your dimensions. I will provide photos when I'm back at the work computer tomorrow.

                  I think 'Re-Engineered' is often misunderstood as 'design overhaul' etc etc. The design has been slightly adjusted to allow for faster fitment time and moving to a press tool. Absolutely everything else is the same. Take it from me, I 're-engineered' and designed it.

                      Thanks for your concern Will_RhinoRack.. I had a bit of a rant, the other day, but got deleted.. Just if I'd known it would be 4 month wait, I would have just put a deposit, and happily waited.. But nothing was said.. I ordered mine from the Queanbeyan 4x4 show, and dealt with the Rhino rep.. As I said, nothing said about the supply issue, was told one to two week wait.. So paid the $1500 up front.. Would have been better to sit in my account for another 4 months, till the gear was here.. Over it now, all good.. Cheers Odog

                          New delivery date is now apparently mid May. That will make it almost a 4 Month wait! Will_RhinoRack any chance of some free tie downs for the ridiculous wait?

                            Hey Will, Cheers for that. Checked out the rack on Mike From Roof Racks Galore's Prado and am pretty sure she'll clear no probs at all. I'm keen for the 19** backbone, I think the 21** is just too long, and kinda defeats the purpose of a sunroof if you cover it completely with a rack.

                              Alright, just read this entire thread, Im sold on the Back Bone system over the ARB roof basket.
                              just wanting to know, what is the best/common width Pioneer Tray used on the 150 series? I think im going to use the 2000m x 1330mm #41104.

                                That's too wide. #41102 and #41107 is what is listed as being compatible for the 150 & 120 Prado.

                                I personally would go for a Platform instead of a Tray. I have seen a few people wanting to swap from a tray to a platform. I find that there's no real benefit to a tray and besides, the tray adds weight which decreases the payload.
